I'm hoping to get more reviews out by doing this
mini-review format. If I want to go into actual depth on this show I'll
do so via multi-vlog reviews or other posts.
In this review of the Westworld episode "The Well-Tempered Clavier" there will be spoilers. So if you
haven't seen the episode, stop reading now and go see it before continuing.
The Revelation of Arnold
Many people had theorized that Bernard was modeled after Arnold Weber. Even pointing out that Bernard Lowe was an anagram of Arnold's name. Last episode left room open for this theory to be true and this episode it was proven.
Ford, for all his talk of warning against being sentimental, modeled Bernard after his dead friend. A friend that he might've ordered killed for one reason or another.
While I believe Ford ordered Arnold killed, that hasn't proven to be canon yet. It's just a very possible theory especially how he acted during the scene where Theresa died. What is known is that Dolores, for one reason or another, killed Arnold. She might've malfunctioned, been ordered by Ford, or been ordered by Arnold.
Of course there is also a possibility that her memories have been tampered with.
William's Actions
William started off as this guy who was good. He was a good guy that wouldn't even 'make love' to a Host because he was engaged. But he soon changed after falling in love with Dolores. Now all he wants is to free her.
He kills the Hosts that Logan was traveling with either because he wanted to make sure no one would hurt his love or to see how it felt. He did mention he now understood that Westworld was a game so...he could have done it to see what it felt like. Which is the same reason the Man in Black (MiB) killed Maeve and her child.
William is dead set on keeping Dolores safe. He has gotten lost in Westworld and found his goal.
He tries to convince Logan to help him but that doesn't work. His friend has to remind him that William is marrying his sister and this park is just an illusion. Dolores is fake and shouldn't be taking over William like she has.
I do like the theory that Logan used this trip to blackmail William. If he has proof that William has been with another woman, even a Host, that might break off the marriage.
William has been getting darker as the season has progressed. So now he is actually creeping out the extremely cocky Logan. This darkening seems to indicate William will eventually become the MiB.
Important Revelations
The MiB has been a mysterious figure since Episode 1. Every now and again we get some little tidbits about who he is. We found out about his married life and why he is obsessed with the maze. We also have been given clues of what his real name is.
This episode, during a discussion with the elusive Charlotte, we find out that he is part of the board. She came to ask him to vote to kick Ford out and said it in a not so kind manner. Basically threatening him if he disagrees.
So now we know why he is being given such special treatment while at Westworld.
It has now been confirmed that Bernard killed Elsie Hughes. A clever bit of editing made it appear that things were in the order that they actually weren't. When Bernard was going through his memories he found out that it was him that killed the woman.
Of course...we could be misinterpreting the memory. Such as it wasn't made clear if she actually died.
Maeve has to build up an army and has decided to recruit Hector. This isn't surprising as they have a thing for each other, their sex scene this episode was hot, and he can fight. I wonder how she will build the rest of her army. She says she wants to treat Hosts differently than humans do, but she did have two Hosts shoot each other in a previous episode so...
Rating: 5/5
Additional Notes:
*The definition of clavier is: a keyboard instrument, especially one with strings, such as the harpsichord
*The Well-Tempered Clavier refers to music
*Ending shot hints that Man in Black (MiB) could be William by the way he looks at Dolores
*There has been no clear shot of MiB raping Dolores yet
