The Dresden Files: Skin Game (Jim Butcher)

Title: Skin Game

Series: The Dresden Files

Author: Jim Butcher

Released: 2014

Rating: 5/6

Basic Plot: Because as Winter Knight to the Queen of Air and Darkness, Harry never knows what the scheming Mab might want him to do. Usually, it’s something awful.

He doesn’t know the half of it…

Mab has just traded Harry’s skills to pay off one of her debts. And now he must help a group of supernatural villains—led by one of Harry’s most dreaded and despised enemies, Nicodemus Archleone—to break into the highest-security vault in town, so that they can then access the highest-security vault in the Nevernever.

It's a smash and grab job to recover the literal Holy Grail from the vaults of the greatest treasure hoard in the supernatural world—which belongs to the one and only Hades, Lord of the freaking Underworld and generally unpleasant character. Worse, Dresden suspects that there is another game afoot that no one is talking about. And he's dead certain that Nicodemus has no intention of allowing any of his crew to survive the experience. Especially Harry.

Dresden's always been tricky, but he's going to have to up his backstabbing game to survive this mess—assuming his own allies don’t end up killing him before his enemies get the chance…

Karrin/Harry Intensifies
My long-time readers are aware that I am a Karrin/Harry shipper. I love the pairing and I find it so maddening that we have gone so long without proper resolution of the pairing. But this is the first book in the series that shows a clear stance of how the pairing will go. So if you're a Karrin/Harry shipper, you should be extremely happy of what happens in this book.

Waldo is Awesome
Waldo Butters is a character that has gone through some serious character development as the series progressed. At first he appeared to be just an average guy that got flung into this magical world and he was just that in the beginning. I am so glad to see a character like this learn and grow as things have changed him. He obviously wouldn't be the same in this book as he was in his first appearance. And Waldo ends up kicking serious ass by the end of this book.

Mab's Game
Mab is tricky. The only thing that stops her from being pure evil is that she protects our world from some great evil. That doesn't mean she's nice and that her version of kind is the same as ours. This book's plot revolves around her paying a debt. But things are eventually revealed to be much more complicated than that. I was glad to see more of how Mab manipulates events and her own moral code.

Final Thoughts
This is a good continuation of The Dresden Files. Harry's relationships (both romantic, family, and friends) are dealt with in a good manner. You can see how he has grown and is afraid of what he might become if he doesn't watch out. I am really worried about Molly and hope in the next book we get more of an explanation about what has happened to her. And the mystery of the book has a lot of twists and turns to it.
