Not Too Dark
This movie begins with Peter's mother dying and then him getting abducted. The next scene is him arriving on an alien planet and it seems a little mysterious/creepy and then it turns into a musical number. Peter uses the mix tape he had before he was abducted to be a way for him to remember his mother by. So this opening is not just funny as hell, but also tells you that Peter still thinks about his mother and his connection to her is beyond important to him.
Great Characters
There wasn't one character in this movie that I didn't like seeing on screen. Chris Pratt did an awesome job as Peter Quill/Star-Lord. Groot was just a joy to see, especially when you saw his close friendship with Rocket. Rocket is the talking raccoon who is the one to really ever understand Groot. Drax is funny even though his species takes everything literally and so he can't consciously tell a joke. Gamora is an assassin with a heart of gold. Karen Gillan does a great job with Nebula and I hope to see her again soon.
Mid and Post Credits Scenes
Don't worry, I won't spoil what happens in each but will just say my feelings about both. The Mid-Credits scene was funny and cute. It was just too adorable. The Post-Credits scene was just...I may need to see the movie again just for that. I mean...what the heck? With a movie that delves into the weird, the Post-Credits scene is unbelievable, but in a good way.
Final Thoughts
This movie was a wild ride. Like The Normal Heart made me cry and feel extreme pain, this movie made me feel the opposite. I usually don't laugh that much in theaters but I was laughing a lot during this one. This isn't to say there aren't sad moments, but the funny moments are beyond hilarious. It is a great combination of sad and funny.
