The Dragonslayer's Sword (Mini-Review)

The Dragonsalyer's Sword is the first book of the Dragonsalyer Series by Resa Nelson. The Dragonslayer Series is also one series in the Dragon Cycle. So I won't be angry about the lack of information as one book can't contain everything in a large series. However, the book has to also be looked at as a self-contained story.

And as a self-contained story how and when information is revealed is extremely poor. I can tell that there is a large world with many people, races, and powers. That is good that the world is diverse. But whenever new information is revealed, especially towards the end, it feels like the knowledge is a plot twist.

Such as Astrid not knowing an alchemist can control ghosts. For some of her life she grew up as a Scalding and I'm supposed to believe she doesn't know what an alchemist does? When Astrid does realize alchemists can control ghosts, it feels like it's supposed to be a shocking moment. She doesn't even reflect back that she should've realized the truth sooner.

The only good thing about the book is the characters. Such as Astrid's journey was compelling to me. I worried when she did, for the most part. I also enjoyed the backstory of Lenore and her eventual fate in the book.

Now if only the worldbuilding hadn't been so much of a mess.
