Death Troopers (Joe Schreiber)

Title: Death Troopers

Series: Star Wars

Author: Joe Schreiber

Released: 2009

Rating: 3.5/6

Basic Plot:

When the Imperial prison barge Purge—temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy's most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels and thieves—breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope seems to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back—bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge will die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning.

The Purge's hozen survivors—two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board—will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting onboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn't really empty at all. The dead are rising, soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

Good Atmosphere
One thing I love about this book is the atmosphere. It is creepy and spooky which made it a good read. There are cliches, but all of them add up to a good time. It was also much better done than the prequel to it (Red Harvest) which might be why my expectations going into this book were so low.

Han and Chewie
This is a very minor spoiler so I don't feel it's wrong to include it here. I like the characters but felt they were an unneeded edition to this book. I wanted to fear for every character and with those two that fear was lessened. You know Han and Chewie will live so there's no real suspense with the parts that they're in. Well...there are still thrills to be had, but you never worry for Han and Chewie's lives.

Zombies
I was attracted to this book and its prequel because of the general premise. I'm not a big zombie fan, but I am a good sized Star Wars fan. So I wanted to see how those two things worked together. In this novel it is done well. There is a mystery about how things came to be and those questions don't get fully answered. Which is okay as the backstory isn't the focus of this novel.

Final Thoughts
This was a very fun and enjoyable read. It has some very creepy moments and the only death I have to complain about is one of the people you could call a villain. If you're looking for a good, undead time then I'd recommend this book. However, if you're looking for a book that is more than its outside appearance I'd suggest passing this book up.
