One thing that makes an already bad work of fiction worse is when it doesn't know what it is. That it's pretending to be something that it's not. This creates disconnect for the readers/viewers/listeners. The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy tries to tell a romantic story which is ruined due to it not really understanding that it's about abuse. So any signs of abuse are pushed to the side instead of being examined.
If it did admit it was about abuse it would be a much stronger work of fiction.
First off, everyone would know the trilogy is about abuse/rape and that it's not a good representation of BDSM. So people wouldn't think that Christian Grey was the most awesome boyfriend you could ever have as well as a little more safety if readers/viewers decided to get into the BDSM community. It would also allow the characters to get some much needed depth as well as the plot of the trilogy having more depth.
Fifty Shades of Grey accepting that it's about abuse could have one of two outcomes:
Fifty Shades Trilogy is an Abuse/Rape Fantasy
If it takes itself as a rape/abuse fantasy then it would have the characters/readers/viewers knowing that's what's going on. Anastasia Steele would realize that the relationship isn't healthy but that she likes being abused. Christian Grey most likely wouldn't kill her in this version as it's a fantasy and I'd think those would end happy.
Well happish in this case.
Fifty Shades Trilogy is an Abuse/Rape Series
If it goes in another direction it could be about Anastasia not realizing the signs that Christian is an abuser and not someone who does actual BDSM. Since she is so naive this could work with her slowly realizing that something is wrong.
You could have the bad ending where Anastasia realizes too late and is killed off by Christian.
You could also have a good ending that could go a few different ways:
1.) Anastasia is able to have him arrested and punished for his crimes.
2.) Anastasia, who had been alerted subtly by Christian's previous submissives, and Christian's previous subs could exact bloody vengeance on the man that caused them all so much pain.
I admit that I favor the second option in this case as it was the plot I was making up so I didn't suffer too much while reading the third book.
