Meg 2: The Trench (Mini-Review)

Meg 2: The Trench is the sequel to The Meg. Jonas Taylor is fighting environmental crimes and also helping Mana One go even deeper into the Mariana Trench. He is also taking care of Meiying Zhang who, as a teenager, has an adventurous spirit. When Jonas goes on a routine mission down into the trench, Meiying sneaks onboard. Before Jonas can turn everyone around, they are attacked and must flee into the trench for safety. But the mysterious trench will offer more threats than anyone could imagine. Meg 2: The Trench was released in 2023. It was directed by Ben Wheatley. It stars Jason Statham, Wu Jing, and Sophia Cai.

There is no mid or post credits scenes. However, during the first part of the credits there's some animation.

If you're looking for a movie with complicated characters and deep themes, this isn't the movie for you. But if you want a movie to relax to, this is the one for you. There is a lot of action going on with good looking actors. There's the stereotypical villains that you love watching meet their demise. Also, giant sharks make their appearance. Plus some new creatures that are fun watching cause havoc.

A good majority of this movie takes place in the Mariana Trench, hence the title, which means only having megalodons as enemies would become difficult as well as underwhelming. You can't take an entire ecosystems and reduce it to only one thing. It's better to see the vast beauty with a decent amount of species. My favorite was the giant squid who, of course, had to fight against one megalodon.

Jonas and Meiying have a complicated relationship. He wants to be a good father for her but it's difficult. She's a teenager who wants to be taken seriously. Problem, like most teenagers, is she doesn't see how dangerous things actually are. She thinks that just because she knows things that she'll be okay. Jonas is a voice of reason but his words are diminished by the fact he has a dangerous lifestyle. In the opening scene he sneaks aboard a ship, takes pictures, and jumps off to be rescued by allies in a plane. Something Meiying points out to Jonas.

It's hard to talk about characters that are so bland. There are character arcs but they're so generic. The villains and heroes are all generic. But in an action oriented film where giant sharks are the focus, this isn't a bad thing. The plot in this movie is just there to give weight to each action sequence. For example: some characters are stuck and the only way to save at least one is for a person to shoot Jonas. This would have no weight unless you knew that Jonas cared deeply for Meiying.

I would highly recommend Meg 2: The Trench to those looking for a fun and action packed creature feature movie. I would also recommend Meg 2: The Trench to fans of Jason Statham.
