Deciphering Klaasje Amandou

Sometimes characters have motives and history that are more than easy to understand. Such as Voldemort is an evil wizard who wishes to have it so only the wizards he likes can live in his world. He is so cruel because he was conceived while his father was drugged via love potion.

Klaasje Amandou from Disco Elysium, on the other hand, provides no easy answers. Who she is can't be answered with any certainty. But I will do my best to uncover who the true Klaasje is deep inside.
The Truth in all the Lies

Klaasje Amandou is one of the most complicated characters due to how often she lies. She will throw 'friends' under the bus and do her best to appear completely innocent. I can't decide if I like her purely because of admiring her guile or that she's an actual good person somewhere deep inside.

She has turned appearing innocent into an art. It helps, though, that she is only one part of a series of crazy events. So when you're on your first playthrough of the game, it will be easy to become lulled into all the lies she tells.

The first thing you need to do to understand Klaasje is to realize that the truth and lies aren't that far apart. Things can both be fully truthful and complete lies at the same time. People that have come to that understanding are the best manipulators.

Klaasje was not raped by Lely. Instead she was in a relationship with him. With a lack of motive for killing Lely, it is clear that she was not involved in his murder.

Think about it. She is more than ready to throw anyone under the bus if it benefits her. Agreeing that Lely raped her would have made things much easier for her. Especially since Titus was already saying that the mercenary had raped her. Someone like Klaasje wouldn't make things harder for herself without reason.

Klaasje truly cared for Lely in a way she wasn't able to with most. So it was her good fortune that she could be honest in her love for the man. Doing so doesn't harm her and so she is able to reply more honestly.

Klaasje revealing to Harry and Kim that others are after her is honest. It also serves to show her in a more innocent light. What monsters would immediately hate someone that is hunted so vehemently? There's a little voice inside that begins to lull you into a false sense of security. One that is never truly diminished even after your first playthrough.

If you decide not to arrest Klassje, she will leave a clue for you that shows where the shot was taken from. This shows that she will be kind only when it doesn't have any chance of causing her harm.
Her Romance with Lely

Klassje Amandou was very well aware that the life she had lead made her an unclean person. That she had crossed more than a few lines to the point she didn't know if there was any goodness in the world. Heck, she didn't know if the concept of evil was just a fallacy so people felt better about themselves.

She knew that the rest of her life would be spent looking over her shoulder. Her enemies were countless and one day she wouldn't be lucky. One day she would die no matter what she did until then.

A part of Klassje does regret her past. Yet she is more than aware that there is no hope of changing for her. Everything she's done has made it impossible for her to become a better person. There is no way that she'll ever learn the difference between good and evil. There is no way for her to ever simply glance at a person without trying to figure out how such a relationship could get her killed.

The reason she loved Lely, at least how much she was able to, was because she saw herself in him. She saw a person who had become twisted and broken through no fault of their own. She saw someone so broken that there was no fixing them.

Yet unlike her, Lely wasn't trying to run away from what life had twisted him into.

Now even though Klassje loved him, both were equally willing to part with each other when the time came. She because it wouldn't be safe to stay with him and Lely because he craved violence.

It is because of her deep feelings towards him that Klassje is shaken from Lely's murder. Yet no matter how shaken she is, Klassje's survival instincts don't fail her. So she does her best to distance herself from the murder.
