Altered Carbon Season 2 (Mini-Review)

The second season of Altered Carbon follows Takeshi "Tak" Kovacs as he seeks out his former lover and leader. It stars Anthony Mackie, Chris Conner, and Renée Elise Goldsberry. It was created by Laeta Kalogridis.

During the wait between Season 1 and Season 2 of Altered Carbon, it was revealed that Richard K. Morgan (author of the Altered Carbon book series that the Netflix show is based off of) is transphobic. Basically he supported a tweet by J.K.Rowling that was transphobic. People, especially fans of the books, were surprised since a person's body not being the most important part is a huge part of both the books and show. So during this latest season I tried to look at the series through an anti-trans lens at times.

My conclusion is, basically, that while stacks are a huge part of the series both seasons have painted them out to be a bad thing. Quellcrist "Quell" Falconer originally created stacks so that humans could explore places they could never get to in only one lifetime. Eventually she regretted her creation and started a movement to get rid of stacks. So there is an anti-trans reading of the series if you want to go that route. The reading I prefer to go with, though, is that Altered Carbon focuses on the importance of death.

Having a new actor for Kovacs hit revrezner harder than it hit me. I know this because he constantly complained about preferring Joel Kinnaman. But both of us were pleased by Anthony Mackie's performance as the character. As I...um...enjoy the male form I enjoyed a few scenes much more than revs did.

It was good to see Will Yun Lee (Kovacs prior to the start of the series) in a much bigger role than before.

Season 1 of Altered Carbon was a murder mystery which meant a lot of twists and turns. Season 2 is a mystery with more focus on action. So it feels like a much lighter season than the previous one. This isn't a bad thing as it's extremely good they didn't just do Season 1 on a different planet.

I would recommend Season 2 of Altered Carbon to those that enjoyed Season 1 and science fiction fans.
