Shipping Confessions: Elfangor/Loren (Animorphs)
Here is another, very rare, canon ship. This time from the Animorphs series. But Loren and Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul is a couple that has very far reaching effects in the Animorphs series, as well as being dear to my heart.
With this ship there aren't only two lives affected, but the lives of the Animorphs themselves.
There will be some big spoilers in this part of Shipping Confessions so if you haven't read The Andalite Chronicles and #49, stop reading and only continue after you've read those two books in the series.
For all those who don't mind spoilers or have read the books, let's start talking about Loren and Elfangor in full.
Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul is a hero to the Andalites. He's widely respected by his own species and the Animorphs. With the Animorphs, he was the first 'good' alien they saw. He was the one to break Seerow's Kindness for them (something they didn't learn about until later) and gave them the ability to fight off the Yeerk Invasion of Earth.
However, in The Andalite Chronicles we learn that there are some things that Elfangor never told his fellow Andalites and other information that his fellow Andalites never let out.
While he is a great warrior, he is also flawed. He isn't the perfect creature that you think he is in the beginning.
While flawed, he also never reveals the location of the Time Matrix so that his fellow Andalites won't abuse its power. Elfangor felt that if Andalites got the weapon then they would do horrible things. He didn't want his species to change merely to win the war.
Loren was captured as a teenager by the Skrit Na, the sort of scavengers of the Animorphs Universe, and was able to adapt quickly to her new situation. She was unafraid of picking up an alien weapon and going against creatures she never knew existed before.
Loren was full of spunk and more than ready to deal with things thrown her way.
She was briefly a Controller, due to the actions of Chapman, and later helped Elfangor solve the way to get out of a pocket universe created by the Time Matrix.
Her memories of her time with Elfangor were eventually erased and she forgot about Tobias, her son. Eventually she was reunited with Tobias and she lived, for a time, in the free Hork-Bajir Valley.
Elfangor and Loren meet shortly after she is abducted by the Skrit Na. He is quickly impressed by her spunk as well as how she can walk easily on two legs. She helped him grow as a person and he helped protect her. Though the protection thing went both ways.
In the pocket universe she helped fight Esplin 9466 (who eventually gained the rank Visser Three). So she wasn't weak and she didn't always need protecting. In that way Loren gave Elfangor a view of humanity that helped him appreciate the species.
Arriving on Earth they ended up getting married. Elfangor was scared of fighting and felt everyone would be better off if he wasn't in the war. When the Ellimist came for him, Elfangor found out he had a son.
As Elfangor lay dying, he asked his son about Loren. The human woman he had loved dearly. Tobias was confused by the question, as he didn't know Elfangor was his father, but replied.
The Ellimist had removed the possibility of Elfangor ever continuing his relationship with Loren and them raising their son together. It would've been nice for Elfangor to be there during the pregnancy at least.
What will I talk about in the next Shipping Confessions? Next Shipping Confessions I will look at the son of Agamemnon and the former fiance of Serena Butler from the Dune prequel novels!
