The Evolution of Beth Greene

I love Beth Greene but do admit that for the majority of the show she just sang and gave moral support to other characters. She never really seemed to have her own moment to shine and go 'There is a Reason I'm in Rick's Group of Survivors'.

That is, until the Season 5 episode "Slabtown".

Beth shows herself, in that episode, to be able to be ruthless and make tough decisions. She does this while showing much more humanity than Rick. She is, beyond anything else, a kind and caring person. This doesn't change just because she's put into a tough position. She reminded me of the Animorphs character Cassie in that respect.

Like Rick did in the previous season, she uses someone becoming a walker as a little bomb. Instead of killing the soon to be walker, she lets it live. So when Gorman "Your Friendly Neighborhood Pedophile" comes in to rape Beth, she allows him to get closer as the walker starts to wake up. And then, when the moment is right, she knocks Gorman to the ground and the newly made Walker starts to eat him.

The next badass moment for her was shooting walkers in the dark. As her and Noah are leaving, she perfectly shoots a bunch of walkers in the head. I mean...that takes talent! There are lights that come on for half a second and she is able to use them to her advantage. She has as much talent with a gun as Daryl has with a crossbow.

Holy shit!
Of course Beth turning out to be a badass doesn't please the majority of people at the hospital. I'm going with the theory that they kidnap people that they think are weak. So when someone like Beth starts showing strength they realize that they made a mistake.

Near the end of the episode Dawn, the lady cop in charge, says that Beth is weak because she tried to attempt suicide. The cop then points to the scars from Season 2. I think that shows more that Dawn is scared than that Beth is weak.

Remember when Beth attempted suicide? If you don't, let me remind you: Andrea gave a speech to Beth about how life will never get any easier. The older woman had attempted suicide previously so her words mean something. When Beth didn't succeed in her suicide attempt that showed that the girl wanted to live, not die.

So Beth's scars are a show of strength of how much she has moved on.
