I was gifted this book last year for Christmas. I was able to finally find time to read it and had a great time. While I do like reading intense books, I also like a good romance. I like reading and knowing that the ending will be happy. It's the chaotic journey to get there that is enjoyable. And there are a bunch of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
Samara Breger uses the queer identity and community to define her vampires. At one point someone asks Poppy to turn them into a vampire. The dialogue between the two characters is easily recognizable as a straight person thinking they are owed what the queer community has created. In other words the fact that queer people accept themselves is a cause for some straights to panic. Such as homophobes wanting a Straight Pride Month since the queers have their own month. This ignores the fact that Pride Month exists to help queers not feel broken and to know they're not alone. When straights feel broken it's due to factors outside of their gender and sexual orientations.
Poppy and Roisin are such a cute couple. Like any good couple they are opposites that work together. Poppy is the outgoing, optimistic, and young vampire. Roisin is the reserved, pessimistic, and older vampire. They teach each other new ways to view the world and grow because of one another.
I would highly suggest A Long Time Dead to those looking for a good queer romance. I would also suggest A Long Time Dead to those looking for a vampire romance.
