Ambulance (Mini-Review)

Ambulance is a movie about a bank robbery gone awry. Will Sharp is a veteran and father that can't depend on his own government any longer. His wife is in need of surgery and he doesn't have the money to pay for it. In an act of pure desperation, he turns to his brother Danny Sharp. Danny pulls him back into the criminal lifestyle with the promise of getting enough money to pay for his wife's surgery. But when the bank robbery doesn't go as planned, the two brothers flee into an ambulance. There they meet Cam Thompson who ends up being their hostage. Ambulance was released in 2022. It was directed by Micheal Bay. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González.

I went into this movie not knowing anything about it. I knew that it was about a bank robbery gone wrong and Jake Gyllenhaal was in it. In all honesty I went to see this movie purely to look at Gyllenhaal for around two hours. He's a good actor and he looks good too. So I didn't know it was a film by Micheal Bay going into it. As he has a distinctive style due to the camera never staying still, it was extremely easy to figure out he directed this film.

Micheal Bay uses drones which makes the shots look more active than they already were. Now using drones for camera work is more than useful in certain situations. Such as if you're looking down at the landscape, drones can make everything flow more smoothly. But Bay uses the drones for scenes like someone walking through a building. It's extremely distracting.

Will Sharp's situation made it seem like the movie would be making a statement. I honestly hate how people can fight for the US and then become forgotten by the government once they come home. Some come home with physical and/or mental injuries. Yet they're not given much support. Will can't receive help for his wife's surgery and so is forced to do something bad to protect the woman he loves. But this movie has nothing to say on how the US government treats its veterans beyond the initial setup.

While Ambulance isn't a movie that has much to say about anything, it at least keeps viewers entertained throughout its runtime. The camera being in constant motion makes it seem like more is going on. There are also funny things that happen outside the main plot. Such as a big deal being made about plastic flamingos. No the flamingos play no great part to the plot but at least they're distracting. Then there's a point where Danny and Will sing together in an attempt to calm Danny down. The attempt is useless but it feels like the actors were having fun.

Is staring at Jake Gyllenhaal worth the price of a ticket? It isn't. Due to me being a member of AMC Stubs, I'm able to see three free movies a week. If I had to pay for a ticket I would have passed this movie up.

I would recommend Ambulance to fans of Micheal Bay. I would also recommend Ambulance to those looking for a fun action movie. I would also recommend Ambulance to fans of Jake Gyllenhaal.
