The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 (Mini-Review)

The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 follows Boba's adventures over the course of two timelines. One where he is solidifying his power on Tatooine and the other where he escapes the sarlacc pit. The Book of Boba Fett was released on Disney+ in 2022.

Writing a summary of this season was hard. This due to the show not knowing which direction it wanted to take and, thus, taking on much more than it could handle. Finding out how Boba survived the sarlacc pit was interesting. Seeing the political landscape of Tatooine in chaos was also interesting. But the show doesn't seem able to find a balance between those two stories. The show's advertisements didn't properly warn viewers that they would be getting so much focus on the past that Boba solidifying his power would appear to be an after thought.

Once the flashback sequences were done I thought now the show would focus more heavily on Boba Fett in the present. Alas, that was not the case. Instead of embracing the present timeline, viewers get episodes that seem to be part of The Mandalorian instead of The Book of Boba Fett. It was as if the showrunners had so little faith in this new show that they had to rely on the old one.

Instead of the mess we got, the show should have focused mostly on Boba's struggles to secure power for himself. Any flashbacks should have been short and to the point. Maybe how exactly Boba survived could have been an ongoing mystery for the season. As for the Mandalorian...he should have had a small role in one episode instead of taking up two to three episodes.

Do you like The Mandalorian? I know I do. Know what I don't like? Watching unrelated shows to know what's going on in the show I like. When The Mandalorian appeared in Boba's show I figured nothing major would happen that would force viewers of The Mandalorian to watch The Book of Boba Fett. Boy was I wrong. There are major things that happen to The Mandalorian's title character as well as Grogu. So if you like The Mandalorian but wanted to give The Book of Boba Fett a pass, I'm sorry.

While I am not a fan of this season, Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett) and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shard) were a joy to watch. I was glad to see Ming-Na getting more work as she is an actress I like. Her performance of Fennec Shard gave the character a serious and deadly edge. You can easily understand why Boba Fett would trust her advice. Temuera gives Boba Fett the feel of a man who has seen and done too much. You can easily imagine Boba deciding to make drastic changes to ease his soul.

This season has a large focus on the Tusken Raiders. It was intriguing to see them as people instead of some dangerous other. While they are more than deadly, there is a sense they're just struggling to build a life like anyone else. It is their belief that Tatooine belongs to them as they've inhabited the planet since there were oceans on it. So when you see Anakin Skywalker slaughtering Tusken Raiders in Attack of the Clones, you'll feel more for them.

I would recommend The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 to fans of the Star Wars franchise.
