Now let's get back to The Betrayal by R.L.Stine!
Chapter 13
Edward Fier is doing his self-imposed task of checking on the shingles. Mary is extremely nervous and warns her cousin about the setting sun while she holds the sides of the ladder. Edward reassures her and tells her to move away. Mary insists he comes down as the shingles are wet from the rain. Don't listen to her, man, you should fall to your bloody death.
Edward is growing annoyed and vents his feelings to her. He says that he doesn't like her always treating him as a child. Mary fires right back at him that she does so because he's reckless. It's almost like he's constantly trying to prove to both Benjamin and Matthew that he's deserving of their respect. Edward then hints that he has things to prove to himself. Does he know how horrible of a person he is and wants to think he's a saint?
Mary finally relents to the fact that she can't stop Edward from checking on the shingles. But she still asks if she can hold the ladder. Edward then says she should be helping in the kitchen. When she retorts that she's no longer a child he...wow...okay, Edward is proving how horrible of a person he is. He tells her that her place is in the kitchen. Mary, push the ladder and kill him! Do it!
But she doesn't act out of anger or appear insulted and instead backs up while still keeping an eye on him. Mary is still worried and cries out for him to be careful. In the middle of her warning she quiets as she notices something wrong with Edward. It takes her a moment to realize that Edward is falling.
Please be dead! Please be dead!
