Animorphs Re-Read: #2 The Visitor (Chapters 9-12)

Chapter 9

Rachel wakes up screaming from a nightmare. She checks if she is still human and then races to the bathroom. She is so spooked that she can't turn on the lights and, instead, just starts puking in her toilet. We also find out that the bathroom connects to the bedroom Rachel's sisters share.

Jordan says she better get their mother and Rachel replies not to because she's fine.  Rachel cleans up and tells Jordan that she just had a bad dream that made her sick. Jordan asks about the dream and Xena Warrior Princess says that she can't remember. Aw, Rachel, say it a lot and maybe it'll suddenly become true.

Jordan points out that Rachel's nightmare was so bad that she woke up screaming and then vomited. Rachel replies that she's just not good at remembering dreams. Jordan asks if Rachel would tell her if anything really bad was going on and Rachel says yes. Of course that's a lie.

Rachel thinks, "I trusted Jordan. I knew in my heart that she was not a Controller. Of course, that's just what Jake had said about Tom."

Rachel moans the fact that she isn't be able to fully trust Jordan. Rachel thanks Jordan for waking her up from the dream that she TOTALLY CAN'T REMEMBER. Then Jordan says that Rachel was yelling something about maggots before she started screaming.

Rachel says goodnight to Jordan and then tells the dream to the reader. About the cat carcass with maggots that vermin were eating. One of the vermin was Rachel in shrew morph.

Chapter 10

Jake and Rachel takes the same bus, so he asks her how she is doing. He says that she looks tired and then asks if the shrew morph creeped her out. She gets all defensive and says that he just thinks she got creeped out because she's a girl.

I think it's because Rachel is used to be thought of as the pretty one that she's all defensive about herself. She knows that she's tough, but a lot of people don't see that. Plus being one of the only two girls in the group and her competitive streak must get to her.

Jake says that he didn't mean he thinks less of Rachel for being creeped out since he had nightmares when he did his lizard morph. He says that he had good dreams when he morphed the tiger, though. Dreams of chasing something through a forest at night, but not wanting to catch whatever it was since hunting was so much fun.

Rachel said that she had felt invincible after morphing the elephant. She brings up the theory that some animals are better for people than others. She then goes off on how she doesn't want to ever morph bugs. I'll be over here laughing my ass off again.

Jake comforts her by saying that her next morph is going to be a cat. According to Tobias, being a cat is awesome. Jake says that he likes morphing a dog and wishes that he could just morph when he was down. This is because dogs know how to have fun.

When the bus pulls up to the school there is a joke about 'normal life'. Rachel says goodbye to Jake, who says they're all in this together, and she goes over to Melissa. Rachel notices that her old friend has been crying. Rachel realizes that she doesn't know how to comfort Melissa, though she would've known in the days before she became an Animorph.

Rachel tries to comfort Melissa and her old friend just gets agitated. Melissa says that everything and nothing is wrong at once. Rachel tries to say that she's still Melissa's friend and that nothing has changed. Melissa says that's a lie since everyone has changed, Rachel isn't her friend anymore, and starts to say something about her parents.

This causes Rachel to ask 'What' as she wants to know if Melissa has figured the truth about her father. However, Melissa goes away before Rachel can know for sure.

Rachel then walks into Chapman since she is so caught up in her thoughts. Chapman tells her to watch where she's going. Rachel recalls that Chapman was the one to tell a Hork-Bajir to get the Animorphs' heads for identification.

The Controller asks what is wrong and Rachel says bad dreams. Chapman reminds her that nightmares aren't real. Rachel tells herself that's not true all the time.

Chapter 11

The Animorphs couldn't go to the Chapman house the next night because of normal high school life. It's nice that the series doesn't glance over the fact that the kids are in school and can't easily escape to their secret life. The fact that sometimes they have to let normal life affect their war on the Yeerks.

A few nights later they are by the Chapman house, ready to infiltrate the Chapman house. The Animorphs don't lock Fluffer up. I see NOTHING going wrong because of that. I'm sure Fluffer won't suddenly pop up suddenly. I'm sure Fluffer will stay away from the house until the mission is over.

Rachel says she wants to just get the mission over with when Cassie asks her. She says she wants to help Melissa because something is wrong. And, maybe, the mission will be able to help Melissa in someway. Marco reminds her that the mission is being done so that they can find some way to strike back at the Yeerks.

His exact words are: "You're supposed to be finding some way for us to get at the Yeerks, so
that we can all turn into wild animals and get ourselves killed."

I am loving you, Marco!

Rachel assures Marco that she knows what she's doing.  Marco says okay and reminds her that she's going into the Assistant Principal's house and if she's caught she'll get a very long detention. All the Animorphs laugh as the idea of detention being the worst outcome is extremely hilarious to them. Rachel remarks on how Marco can be a pain in the ass, but he can also make you laugh when you need to.

Rachel signals Tobias down and he says that things are good for the mission to truly begin. Fluffer is nowhere near the house. Marco makes a joke on how Tobias and himself could make good burglars. Adding that Jake could be Spider-Man and catch the two of them.

Rachel again says she's ready and Tobias privately tells if she runs into trouble to get out of the house and he can fly her away to safety.

Rachel starts to morph Fluffer and remembers clearly him trying to kill her. Aw, such pleasant memories!

Rachel mentions that the first time you do a new morph you can't control how it happens. Even Cassie, the Master Morpher, can't control the first morph. The others agree that her morphing Fluffer is looking good so far. Marco suggests her doing cat food commercials.

Why the fuck are you still morphing without first removing your clothes first? Why? Why? Why?

Rachel remarks on how she feels the strength of Fluffer. Of how she feels like only the strongest parts of her will remain at the end of the morph. Rachel says the overriding emotion of Fluffer/a cat is confidence.

Rachel says that it looks like daylight to her. Cassie says that a cat's night vision is better than a human's. Cue a joke from Marco. Rachel says cat night vision isn't just about what you see. It's about what you notice. The only thing a cat really notices is movement.

Rachel doesn't care about Jake's voice, she is totally focused on the sound a mouse is making. Cassie asks Rachel if she can hear them. Rachel replies she can, but it's hard to concentrate. That's about my state of mind right now.

Tobias flies and Rachel instantly goes into fighting mode. There is really no transition here. One second she is calm and the next second she is ready for a fight. Cassie tells Rachel to calm down since it's just Tobias. Cassie then tells Tobias to stay away since cats are genetically programmed to fear large bird.

Rachel says her fear of Tobias as a cat is the same but different from the shrew's. There is anger in the Cat Rachel's fear of Tobias.

I think this quote not only sums up what that means, but is very Rachel:

And the message I was trying to communicate was, "Don't mess with me. You may be bigger than me, you may scare me, you may make me run away, but if I have to I am ready to fight."

Cassie asks how being a cat feels and Rachel replies that it feels like she's Clint Eastwood. Marco reminds Rachel to still be afraid like a human, to have caution. He makes a joke that includes saying Rachel is fearless and that he's scared shitless at the moment. Cassie seconds that Rachel still needs to be cautious.

Rachel says everything is fine and decides to let the mouse live because she's not hungry. Cassie says that they'll be there for backup if need be.

Rachel mentions that she doesn't want to take full control of her cat mind since she's not fearless. Whatever the others may think: she's the not fearless person the others think she is.

Cassie reminds Rachel of the time so Rachel will know when she has to demorph.

Chapter 12

Rachel is enjoying her cat morph. A lot. She talks about how a cat is more graceful than a human. She leaps three feet onto a fence, says it's like a human leaping a two story building, out of reflex. She doesn't even have to think about it.

Rachel continues to do whatever she wants and remarks that the best human gymnast is nothing compared to a cat. Her fun is broken when the others ask what she's doing. She had forgotten about the others being there.

Rachel says that she was just practicing and then mentally tells herself that she can have fun as a cat later.

Rachel sniffs some cat piss and smells that it's from another tomcat. One that could kick her ass and so she'd have to submit to it. She says she's not afraid of the tomcat, just a little less arrogant than she had been before. When Tobias asks why she sniffed cat piss she lies and says that she was just playing the part. Tobias tells her that being an animal for a little while is fun, not so much fun when you have to live every second of every day as one.

Tobias seems to be saying that he regrets his decision to be trapped in morph. That whatever he thought before, being permanently a red-tailed hawk isn't as fun as he thought it was going to be.

The reminder of what will happen if Rachel goes over the time limit smacks her into reality. It shows that she is frightened of Tobias' fate happening to her. She then tries to control the cat mind and finds it hard. The cat mind doesn't know what it means to obey. Rachel then uses the memory of the tomcat's piss to scare the cat mind into submission.

Tobias says that Rachel is almost there and that she's in the right yard. Rachel says she knows and uses the word 'me' to describe Fluffer's territory. Tobias reminds her that this is the Chapman yard. And the Chapmans are Controllers that work for Visser Three.

I love Rachel's response and so am putting it here:

I trotted to the cat door. Chapman. Visser Three. Big deal. I was a combination of Rachel and
Fluffer. What did I care about Chapman and Visser Three?

Here to Rachel's ego becoming bigger while being in cat morph!

Rachel is able to tell, by smell alone, who lives in the house. She mentions that cockroaches were fun to watch but they weren't prey. Rachel notices the sound of Melissa's mother and also the annoying sound of the refrigerator. She also takes notice of the birds outside. Finally she notices Melissa's voice but it's muffled and they're not in the same room.

Rachel starts to go over to where she hears Melissa's voice. The human part of her mind knows she should be afraid, but the cat/Fluffer part is reassured because it's his house. There are no other smells besides Fluffer's own and human smells. I am laughing a little at the fact that Fluffer doesn't consider human smells important.

Rachel sees that Chapman is just sitting on the couch. He's not watching tv or listening to music. He's just sitting there. Almost like he's not human!

Ms. Chapman is just cutting vegetables without any background noise. She's not even humming to herself. It's almost like she's not human either!

Rachel has to force herself to concentrate on Melissa's voice instead of the more interesting sounds of birds. She hears her former friend doing math homework and feels guilty because that's what she should be doing. I wouldn't feel guilty, I'd rather face Visser Three than do math homework. But maybe I'm just insane like that.

Rachel looks around for a clock so that she knows when she has to demorph. She finally finds a clock and sees she has more than enough time to get the mission done. She is startled when Chapman gets up. Rachel knows watching Chapman is the reason she is in cat morph in enemy territory, but she has to fool the cat part of her to be interested. She does so by saying that Chapman is their prey.

Is he prey? The cat brain seemed to be asking.

Yes. Yes, I told the cat brain. Chapman is our prey.

Rachel then proceeds to follow Chapman. He opens a door and Tobias asks how Rachel is doing. This spooks Rachel and causes her to make a movement a real cat wouldn't make. She knows that he must be close to be able to talk with her and she hears birds being silent since a big hawk is outside the house.

Rachel replies that she is fine but that he scared her half to death. Tobias says sorry but that he was worried about her. She reassures him and tells him that she's following Chapman to the basement. When Tobias asks why, Rachel says that it's because that's where the Controller is going.

Rachel makes mention that Tobias talking to her is annoying her since the cat part of her didn't care. This makes concentrating on what he's saying very hard to do. All the cat part of her wants to do was go down to the basement.

Rachel says it's weird walking down stairs as a cat. It gives her a sense of vertigo. Rachel says that she's thankful that Tobias is concerned, but that she's busy right now. Tobias says he understands and that she's starting to reach the limits of how far Tobias' thought-speak can reach. When she calls out for him, he doesn't reply.

I am loving Tobias' concern for Rachel in this scene.

The cat part of Rachel's mind concentrates on the fun things in the basement that there are to chase. Rachel has to remind herself that she is here to follow Chapman. That Chapman is the prey. Rachel smells that only one part of the basement seems to have been used and is full of Chapman's scent.

Chapman walks down the path that is full of his scent and opens a door. Beyond that door is a door that's similar to a bank vault's door. Chapman puts his hand on a panel and the second door opens. Rachel remarks that it's like a door in Star Trek. I can't believe I didn't realize how much of a Trekkie Applegate was when I first read this series!

Rachel and her cat mind are in agreement that following Chapman is a bad idea. Rachel because she has human fear and the cat mind because it doesn't understand why they should go into the dark place.

But she has to remind herself that following Chapman is the whole point of this spying trip and Chapman is prey.

Rachel goes into the dark room at the very last second. When Chapman turns on the lights, she remarks that cat eyes work better in the dark than they do in the light.

Chapman sits down at a desk that has some odd equipment and just waits for something to happen. Rachel stays out of Chapman's sight in case he realizes that she's not really Fluffer. She does this because she remembers Jake's warning about how a Controller, like Chapman, would notice if an animal was acting oddly. They would know that the animal isn't an animal but someone in morph. Since the Yeerks don't know Elfangor gave humans the ability to morph, they'd assume the Animorph was an Andalite.

A hologram of Visser Three appears on Chapman's desk. Rachel's fear the the Visser overpowers the cat part of her mind. She then gives a list of why she is scared shitless about seeing this particular Controller.

Chapman and the Visser greet each other. Chapman's Yeerk turns out to have the name Iniss two two six.

While Rachel is focusing on what is happening the cat part of her is more interested in the hologram. The cat brain realizes that it's not really there. Rachel remarks that Visser Three still seems solid. She doesn't want the Visser to look at her, not even a hologram version of him.

Visser Three asks Chapman how the search for the Andalite bandits is going. Chapman says they haven't been found yet and the Visser yells at the Controller for not finding them. He wants them found now. Rachel can smell fear on Chapman.

Visser Three says that if the Council of Thirteen finds out about the bandits they'll be angry at him. Then the Visser will be angry at Chapman. Rachel can smell Chapman sweating and she also thinks she can smell Iniss.

Visser asks what the creature (aka cat) is. Rachel freezes up at the Visser's gaze. Chapman explains that humans keep cats as pets. Visser Three asks why it's in the room and Chapman replies it's his host's daughter's pet. Visser then tells Chapman to kill it.

Well, Rachel seems to have a great night ahead of her.

Animorphs Re-Read: #2 The Visitor (Chapters 5-8)

Chapter 5

Rachel can't say what she wants to to the guy since she is too far along in her African elephant morph. She still tries to, though. The guy that was chasing her is freaked out and runs like the devil is chasing him.

Once the guy is gone Rachel demorphs. She was wearing loose clothing so that wasn't destroyed. However, her shoes were and now it's raining. Good going, Xena Warrior Princess. You not only risked the Yeerks finding out about you but also have to walk home barefoot.

Luckily Melissa offers her a ride. That's the good news. The bad news is that Chapman, her father, is driving. Only now does Rachel realize how stupid she was for morphing without concern for who was watching and how the information could get out that she can morph. This puts not only her life at risk, but the lives of her friends.

Rachel tries to say no, but Chapman insists. It's a very awkward car ride for Rachel as she tries not to stare at the back of Chapman's head. Rachel keeps thinking about the fact that there is a Yeerk in Melissa's father's head. That Chapman isn't Chapman. That's he being controlled. Dominated.

Melissa asks about the guy and if he was bothering Rachel. Rachel tries to lie, but it's a really lame lie. Chapman points out that the guy ran away really scared. Then he says that he knows where she lives. Rachel, already being terrified that Chapman saw her and that Melissa might be a Controller, thinks that Chapman is threatening her.

It turns out that Chapman was not threatening her, but merely assuring her about his ability to get to her house.

Rachel exits the car and tells Melissa she does want to hang out. When Melissa points out that Rachel's shoes are unusable now, Rachel jokes about really needing to go shopping. Chapman gets an unreadable expression on his face. Rachel goes into her house being shaken, but alive.

Rachel goes down to the kitchen and sees her mother. Rachel brings up the point that her mother is a lawyer and divorced from her father. She says that her mother does her work in the kitchen so that Rachel doesn't feel abandoned by her.

Rachel's mother asks how Rachel got home. Rachel replies that Melissa and Chapman gave her a ride home. She leaves out the part about morphing part-way into an African elephant to scare off a guy.

Sara and Jordan, Rachel's sisters, are watching a scary movie. Rachel's mother brings up the point that they'll have trouble sleeping. Rachel's mother says that Rachel wasn't like that. I am laughing along with Rachel. Rachel's life now involves things creepy enough to compare to any horror movie. Though the really creepy shit doesn't come until later.

Rachel refrains from talking about her new life as an Animorph and asks what's for dinner. Rachel's mother replies that she's sorry that she can't make dinner and that Rachel should just order something. I like Rachel's jab at her mother's cooking ability.

After dinner Rachel calls her fellow Animorphs and gives a cover story over the phone. She has to be careful as the Yeerks are watching. Also when she calls Jake she points out, yet again, that Tom is a Controller.

Rachel tells them about Melissa, about her run in with the guy, and leaves out the fact that she was taken home by Chapman. She says she's glad she didn't tell the whole story as Marco is sane and yells at her for morphing in public.

Marco points out that the guy could've been a Controller and Rachel brings up the point that the Yeerks are only interested in people in power. Jake counters by pointing out that Tom isn't in a position of power. Marco then continues by saying that if the guy ran to someone that was a Controller Rachel would've stopped the Animorphs before they truly started their fight.

Rachel notices that her whole life is now one big lie. Rachel admits she's wrong to the group, but Marco still wants to yell at her stupidity. Jake tells him to stop and Cassie makes a joke about the incident. Ah, Cassie the Peacemaker.

Jake says they can't use Rachel to get close to Melissa and therefore get close to Chapman. This is due to Melissa being weird and possibly a Controller. Rachel suggests morphing into small animals and hiding out in the Chapman house.

Marco says that's stupid as when Jake morphing into a lizard he lost his tail. Oh, come on! That wasn't causing Jake any real harm, just creeped him out. Marco and Rachel both say that morphing into a cockroach would be gross. Let me just spend a few minutes trying to stop my laughter.

Rachel also says that a cockroach's senses probably won't be useful for spying. They all turn to Cassie for answers and the moralist is just in shock. She points out that she doesn't take care of cockroaches in the Rehabilitation Clinic.

Rachel, along with the rest of the Animorphs, thinks about how hopeless their situation looks. But, unlike her compatriots, she's driven to complete this goal to make sure Chapman doesn't suspect her of being anything other than a normal teenage girl.

I'll take a moment here to talk about how Tobias must feel. [Oh, yes, friends. Don't make a system so I'll know when you're having a meeting discussing how to strike back at the Yeerks. It's not like I was the most adamant to fight against the alien invasion when Elfangor crash landed. Never mind that I'm having to keep my humanity while the hawk part of me tries to take over. Yes, I'm completely fine.]

Now back to our regularly scheduled Re-Read:

Rachel looks at some pictures in her room. We find out that Rachel's Dad is a weatherman on TV. Rachel focuses on a picture of her and Melissa. Jake asks why Rachel is showing such interest in that photo. She says that Melissa has a cat.

Chapter 6

The Animorphs are scouting the Chapman house. A perfectly normal house that doesn't hint that at least one member of the household has an alien from another planet in their head.

Marco decides to joke and say that he was afraid of Chapman before they found out he was a Controller. Rachel asks if Marco is still upset over the detention Chapman gave him for listening to his CD player in class and singing. Marco says that if Chapman was human he wouldn't have given him such a long detention.

I have been conflicted about liking Marco, but I am loving him in this scene!

Cassie brings up the point that they haven't figured out how to get Melissa's cat outside. She points out that waiting in the bushes would take too much time. Tobias asks what the cat looks like and Rachel says the cat's name is Fluffer McKitty (Marco points out the name is stupid). I get that the name of the cat had to be said, but the placement doesn't make sense to me.

Rachel describes the cat to Tobias and he flies away to look for the adorably named cat. I mean badly named cat!

Rachel realizes that they should've morphed another cat to get Fluffer out of the house. Marco, of course, makes fun of this idea. Rachel brings up the fact that Tobias' first morph, the first morph ANY of them did, was of a cat. I think she brings this up because she has feelings for bird-boy. I think this because it seems out of place otherwise.

Cassie reminds Rachel that she'll need to stay in character as a cat. If a non-Controller saw a cat acting oddly they'd think nothing of it. But Chapman is a Controller and he would notice.

Tobias says he's spotter Fluffer and lands on a branch. Rachel then commences fangirling over Tobias' red-hot...er..red-hawk body.

Rachel is surprised that Tobias found the cat. He starts to list some animals he spotted while flying around and ends with rats. Marco is surprised that there are rats in 'suburbia' and Tobias then proceeds to talking about how delicious they would be to eat. Marco then goes too far by joking that he won't be friends with someone who eats rats.

Rachel tells Marco to shut up while Jake makes a joke that says the basic same thing.

The reason Marco's jab crossed the line is because none of the other Animorphs know what Tobias is going through. None of the other Animorphs have been stuck in morph and Tobias has been in red-tailed hawk morph for over a week.

I forget the series (possibly Earthsea by Ursual K LeGuin) where those who change into animals are in danger of forgetting who they are if they stay in animal form too long.

Marco apologizes to bird-boy. Or at least his version of an apology.

Tobias then leads the Animorphs to Fluffer. Cassie remarks how odd they look following Tobias. They finally see Fluffer and Marco reminds Rachel that she needs the cat carrier. Rachel says that she doesn't as she'll bring Fluffer over to the others once she gets the cat.

Rachel tries to call Fluffer to her and he doesn't want to. It turns out that Fluffer is a tomcat which means it'll be painful/hard to catch him. Cassie says that even if Fluffer has been fixed, he's out at night in hunting mode which means things could quickly get painful.

Rachel doesn't think Cassie is correct and attempts to pet the cat. This ends with Rachel getting scratched and Fluffer running up a tree. Cassie says that gloves would've been a good idea, Jake asks how things are going, and I'm just sitting here laughing.

Marco and Jake start giggling. Rachel says that acquiring Fluffer was supposed to be the easy part. She then requests Tobias' help. Bird-boy says that no way is he going to try and catch an angry tomcat. Rachel says that she doesn't want Tobias to do that, she wants him to get her a mouse.

Chapter 7

Tobias announces he has a baby mouse and asks if Rachel is ready. Rachel mentally calms herself down. She catches the mouse when Tobias tosses it to her. When Cassie says they should get rabies shots I am confused. Morphing heals your wounds, so rabies wouldn't be a problem and morphing would probably erase the shots anyways.

Cassie says that Tobias caught a full grown shrew and not a baby mouse. When it's asked if that's a bad thing, she replies that she doesn't know. Marco then makes a crack about Rachel being a shrew. Rachel then tells everyone to be quiet so she can acquire the shrew.

Rachel tells the readers what DNA is and how you acquire a morph. She says it's easy to concentrate but the shrew is gross.

Once Rachel finishes acquiring the shrew Jake questions the plan and Marco agrees. Cassie warns Rachel about how cats eat shrew. That sometimes they play with them and, at other times, they just kill them outright. Tobias privately thought-speaks to Rachel to reassure her that he'll be keeping a very close eye on her.

Rachel then morphs into the shrew. She says she doesn't know how the morphing technology works and all she knows is that it does work. She mentions that some morphs you can sort of feel pain, but not quite. The shrew is one of those morphs.

When she finishes morphing she feels the shrew's fear. Cassie asks how Rachel is holding up. Rachel is not holding up at all and the shrew mind takes over. She starts to run as Cassie yells at her to get control. Rachel knows Cassie is right, but the fear is just too great. There is also hunger, too.

Tobias tells Rachel to take control from the shrew mind. But she can't. She escapes the Animorphs and then a shadow descends on her. Oh, goody! Is it Fluffer? Cute, nice Fluffer?

Chapter 8

Nope, it's Tobias. Dammit! I mean...yeah?

Tobias swoops down and picks up Rachel in his talons. He tells her to calm down and take control. It's actually pretty sweet how she talks about focusing on Tobias' thought-speak.

Rachel says that she is okay and then Tobias asks if he hurt her. She says no. Aw, you two!

Jake then asks if Rachel is okay. Rachel talks about how the shrew is scared while neither her elephant or bald eagle morphs were. Cassie explains that they have mostly stuck to dominant animals as morphs.

Rachel says to just get this part of the mission over with as she's not enjoying herself. Marco remarks how she still looks nervous. Rachel openly admits she's nervous but that she still wants to do her plan.

Marco picks up Rachel and says she looks lovely. Oh, Marco, I can't tell if you're trying to hit on her or poke fun at her.

Marco puts Rachel at the base of the tree that Fluffer is in. Rachel says for the others to stand back. Jake says that they have to be able to get between her and Fluffer. Rachel, being Rachel, says she can kick Fluffer's butt. If there's one shrew I had to bet on, I'd bet on Rachel.

Rachel comments on how much waiting is sucking. The fact is that both her and the shrew mind are both scared.

Finally Fluffer makes his move and Rachel freezes. The others don't and they manage to get Fluffer into the cat carrier. Of course they get slightly injured in the process. Marco is the only one to make a fuss out of being scratched.

Rachel makes sure to demorph as quickly as possible.

Once Rachel fully demorphs she says she is never going to do the shrew morph again. Jake says he should've done his lizard morph, but Rachel points out that would've creeped him out. He counters by saying that now she is the one who's creeped out. Jake then continues that she'll recover and at least she didn't eat a spider.

Rachel says to just let her acquire Fluffer and Cassie wonders if it's good for Rachel to acquire two morphs in one night. Jake says, again, that he shouldn't have let her acquire the shrew. Rachel then tells Jake that he has never been able to tell her what to do.

Rachel then goes to acquire Fluffer and seems cocky about doing so. I don't blame her as she didn't have a great time in her shrew morph. After she acquires him she sees Cassie smiling at her. The moralist says that Rachel seems like her old self but she now has four animals inside her (aka four morphs). Cassie also wonders about if there's a limit to how many morphs you can have. Marco, ever the voice of optimism in the group, says that they'll find out at the worst possible time.

The point of a limit on the number of morphs makes Rachel reflect on how odd morphing is. How much of a weapon the power to morph is.

Rachel says she'll acquire Fluffer now, but that the rest of the mission will have to wait until later. Jake agrees and it appears that he worries for Rachel.

They let Fluffer out of the carrier and Marco makes a joke about the cat eating Rachel's shrew. This disturbs Rachel for obvious reasons.
