Revolution (Season 2)

Show: Revolution

Season: 2

Episodes: 22

Created By: Eric Kripke

Released: 2013-2014

Rating: 4.5/6

Basic Plot: Fifteen years after a permanent global blackout, a group of revolutionaries seeks to drive out an occupying force posing as the United States Government.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Difference From Season 1
The changes make this show feel like something different, but in a good way. It's not a rehashing of the first Season which is a very good thing. What you get instead are new enemies (the Patriots) and a sub-plot that slowly gains importance as the Season goes on (the nanites). A lot of people had problems with either the plot lines or the nanites. Or both. I don't get why something introduced in the first Season and got better explained this Season would be hated so much.

The Odd Hiatuses
One thing that was really odd and strange were the odd hiatuses that would take place during this Season. Besides moving the show to a different time, this seems like NBC was trying to cancel the show by going, "The show's ratings went down. However did THAT happen? Well, guess we have to cancel it." If people didn't like it, fine. But for NBC to make it hard to watch when it aired is a completely different thing.

Aaron's Expanded Role
I am one of the few people that really enjoy Aaron. So I was very pleased this Season when his role got expanded. Because of his ties to the nanites the show focuses on him more than it did in the first Season. Some people were angry about more Aaron in the show and would even skip through his scenes. Hell, those people were happy when he broke away from the group so that his scenes were easier to skip through.

Final Thoughts
This was a good Season that expanded on the first and ended with a big cliffhanger. I liked Monroe getting redeemed and not all the characters being together at the start of the Season. I also love that Aaron gets a more expanded role this Season. I know a lot of people don't like him but I don't see why people would hate this lovable character. Well, I had a good time watching this show but it's over now.

Sayings Sundays (June 1, 2014)

Revolution was recently cancelled. It was about a group of people living after the apocalypse which was caused by nanobots making electric power impossible. The journey with the main group of characters goes from fighting against Monroe to fighting against a group called the Patriots to realizing that the nanobots are bad and with a third season we would've seen more evil nanobots trying to take over the world.

The ending of Season 2 was a big cliffhanger and I'm mourning the fact that we'll never know for certain what will happen next.

This quote is from Charlie and I chose it to show off some of her sass.

Here is a nice sad graphic for today to combat the funny sass from the other graphic.

For awhile now "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor has been a good go to for a sadness song that fits a lot of fandoms. Especially the heartbreaking ones.

The Animorphs series is a series aimed for children that's actually pretty adult in certain themes like the moral grey area and the effects of fighting a war. So it fits that one of the main characters dies. Specifically Rachel.

Tobias and Rachel were a huge item and so Tobias ends up going into a big depression after the war. He ends up living in the wilderness as a hawk. So I figured to use those lyrics and a picture of a red-tailed hawk. I would've used a picture of Rachel but the lyrics are from Tobias' point of view.

The Revolution Cliffhanger

When it was announced that Revolution was cancelled, I was upset. It was a good sci-fi show that took place after the apocalypse (aka when the lights went out) and had interesting twists and turns. I wanted it to continue but I didn't think I'd be so heartbroken when the last scene of the series aired.

What kind of heartbroken? The "Dammit! Now I'll never know how this cliffhanger is resolved" kind of heartbroken.

I figured that with the show being cancelled the whole Patriots plot would be resolved in some manner. Maybe there'd be another plot introduced but it wouldn't be major.

Boy was I wrong about that.

Throughout the Second Season of the show there was a little nanobot sub-plot. Weird things happened and the nanos turned from friend to foe during the course of the Season. I figured that with the show being canceled that the nano sub-plot would be resolved simply. Such as Aaron's wife being fine and they realize that the nanos won't be able to enact their plan of world domination. Maybe a final shot hinting that the nanos have another plan but nothing as big as the final shot of the series.

It turns out that the nanobots are now taking over other people, since Aaron and his wife wouldn't accept being controlled, and making them all live in the town Bradbury. Bradbury, for those unfamiliar with the sci-fi genre, most likely comes from the famous author Ray Bradbury. That reference alone made me giddy.

Then there is the sign that lights up in the final scene.
This reminds me of the Stephen King book It where the villain is a clown. Well...the villain takes on the form of a clown for the most part. Also the town itself might be a King reference. In The Stand there is a town with the good guys and there is another town with the bad guys. That might just be me, though.

The series finale left me, and other viewers, with the plot of robots taking over the world. That is a cliffhanger that hurts! Now it is only through fanfiction that the fans will have a continuation of the series as it appears unlikely that it will be picked up by another network.

Sayings Sundays (May 4, 2014)

And here is yet another Hannibal quote. Is it becoming even clearer that I just love this show?

This quote talks about Hannibal Lecter who is the killer that everyone is looking for. Hannibal has the ability to hide right under your nose without you suspecting a thing. I cut out the part of the quote where Gideon says that Will will have to kill Hannibal as capturing the killer won't do the trick.

I'm posting this quote, instead of a Star Wars one, today because I've seen the show get a shitload of unfounded hate recently.

I've recently run into a Kelly Clarkson song called "Honestly". It is a nice, slow, and emotive song. It has a lot of emotion but none of the song jumps out at you with a loud volume. I would highly suggest giving it a listen to.

I chose these lyrics and the show Revolution due to this week's episode. At the very end of last episode, Charlie is given no choice but to kill Jason. In this week's episode she has to tell Tom and it ends with her begging him for death while he was the first to offer death to her.

This was a heartbreaking scene as neither character sees eye to eye but it took the death of Jason to give them an inkling of connection. Their pain over Jason's death is such a shared experience that it makes the scene even more powerful than it already was.

Revolution "Mis Dos Padres" Review

Chewie (aka Aaron Pittman) learns a little more of why the nanites contacted both him and his wife, Priscilla. It turns out the nanites just want to learn about their 'parents'. They want to learn about where they came from. That's a very human thing to want and shows that the AI is highly advanced.

Grace reveals that the code Chewie wrote basically helped the nanites form their consciousness. So that's why they considered the duo their mother and father. Grace also talked about how many nanites are out in the world now. Sort of creepy once you really think about it.

Monroe and his son Connor bond. Of course there's a question as to why Monroe cares so much about him. That could be because Monroe plans to use Connor to bring back the Republic or that he does really care for his son. A third option is a combination of the first two.

Charlie and Gene have some bonding time as, by the end of the episode, the latter is made to try and find a cure to a sudden outbreak of typhus. Not sudden to the Patriots as it seems they injected the oranges with it.

The Patriot's plan is a cold but logical one. They'll be the heroes for stopping an outbreak and people will bend to what they say.

Jason finds out that the rehabilitation program (like the one he was sent to) was just the first part and that things were going to get worse. Of course Tom and Julia weren't in the mood to listen, so that mystery will be dragged out some more.

I don't have high hopes that Julia meant to do good all along. She just seems very manipulative.

Shipping Confessions: Miloe (Revolution)

I return even though the last time I posted a Shipping Confession it was all the way back in July. However, I still ship the ship that I mentioned in the last Shipping Confession. With the recent episodes I couldn't help but continuing to ship it.

I usually never pair people up in the first episode and usually I never ship them that hard. For some reason, though, I decided to ship this pair together by the end of the first episode. This defies logic as, well, they didn't really spend that much screen time together in the pilot.

What is this ship that took my shipper heart to a new level?

Miloe (aka the shipping name between Miles Matheson and Sebastian 'Bass' Monroe). I believe this has become one of the popular ships of the series, but I started before I knew about all the Miloe love. I know it's a little pompous for me to say that I started shipping Miloe 'before it was cool', but that's the truth.

Since I already talked about Miles in the last Shipping Confessions, I'll skip right to Monroe.

Monroe is the big bad of the first season and we see him in a negative light. Miles and him started the Monroe Republic since the world had gone to shit after the power went out. People were acting like savages so Monroe, with leadership from Miles, built the Republic.

However, something changed in Miles and he wanted out. After Miles left, Monroe seemed to go deeper and deeper into insanity. It's almost like without Miles, Monroe can't exist. At least not as a good leader.

Monroe and Miles meet up before the Season 1 Finale and Miles couldn't kill Monroe. Like, even though Miles won't fight for Monroe, he still cares too much to kill the man.

In Season 2 we get a more human Monroe. By that I mean he isn't the big bad. You get to see him redeeming himself by helping out our heroes.

This pairing is one of those that is broken. Miles has moved on but still has feelings for his old friend and Monroe needs Miles in order to keep his own sanity. I don't think it's any coincidence that Monroe went crazy after Miles left.

Not only did Miles leave him, Miles tried to kill him. Monroe puts so much faith in Miles to help him hold on that when he's gone, Monroe has to struggle to move on.

And why did Monroe help Charlie? Among other reasons, to prove to Miles that he is still a good man. That whatever other evils Monroe has done, he still loves Miles dearly. That he will team up with whomever Miles wants just to keep his lover close by.

But why does Miles continue to love Monroe? Love is one of those things that can't be easily explained. It's not something you can ever fully understand. Part of Miles knows he shouldn't still care for Monroe after all the man has done, but he can't help himself. Even when given the option to kill Monroe for the greater good, he can't.

I dearly hope Miloe will be explored as the series goes on, even if it doesn't become canon. More Miloe will either happen in flashbacks, in the present time of the series, or in mentions depending what happens in the second part of Season 2.

What ship will I talk about in the next Shipping Confessions? It is from The Avengers and involves two scientists. I was debating doing this one or another but decided on The Avengers ship because it forms the basis for why I ship the other.

Shipping Confessions: Charlie Matheson x Miles Matheson (Revolution)

You read the title correctly, today's ship is an incest ship. Some of you might feel disgusted and dirty about just reading the title. You might even now start to hate me because incest is wrong and all that jazz. Whatever your feelings are at the moment, know that I really have no limits when it comes to shipping because it's fiction. The laws of fiction don't govern the laws of real life (there are some instances where life imitates art, but that's not a given).

So when I ship something, it doesn't mean I'd agree with it in real life. Shipping incest is one of those instances. So, rest assured, that I don't support incest.

I started to watch Revolution because J.J.Abrams was part of the team and I enjoyed Fringe. The fact that it was also a post-apocalyptic series was a huge bonus. That sub-genre is one I am in love with because our horrible tomorrows reflect what we consider important in today's world. In Revolution there was an event referred to as 'The Blackout' that caused everything electronic to stop working. This works well as today's world is dependent on electricity.

The ship from the show that I am talking about today is Charlie Matheson and Miles Matheson.

Charlie Matheson is the character the audience is supposed to relate to the most. She is there to ask questions that the audience is asking. Her character is important in the science fiction genre as a whole. When you're introduced to a new world having someone to ask what you're thinking is very useful.

Charlie looks after her brother Danny (who has asthma), uses a bow and arrow, and lives in a little village so she doesn't know much about the world beyond. Nor is she really shown wondering about leaving the home she knows. It seems having her family (made of her brother and father) there is what matters and so she has no need to wander.

Her village, however, still feels the grips of the Monroe Republic. The event that starts the show is Tom Neville (who is a Captain in the Monroe Republic) killing Charlie's father, Ben, and then taking Danny as a hostage. In order to get her brother back, Charlie goes to find Miles Matheson (her uncle). The two bond quickly and they go after Danny.

As the Season progressed, Charlie's knowledge of the world expanded and her connection to Miles grew.

While Charlie is the mouthpiece for the audience, Miles Matheson is already immersed in the world of Revolution. He is my favorite character on the show and has done some dark things.

Miles formed the Monroe Republic with his friend Sebastian "Bass" Monroe. Miles, it is implied, did some very dark things in the events prior to the show. While Miles did initially support Bass, he ended up changing his mind. He changed his mind so much that he attempted to assassinate Bass. Upon failing, he ran away and hid from Monroe's sights.

When Miles first meets Charlie he doesn't want to help her (think of Han Solo helping the rebellion in the original Star Wars Trilogy). He does end up joining her and it seems like he enjoys her company more than an uncle should. Through the Season he takes risks that go beyond one family member helping another.

Charlie and Miles, of course, don't see eye to eye. Especially in the beginning when Charlie still has her innocence. This is what bugged me, and many other viewers, when the show started. Charlie is supposed to be our speaker, but she didn't act how we acted. Luckily, she quickly evolves into a fierce little fighter.

Now in the show Charlie's canon relationship is with Jason Nevile (though when he first appears he goes under the alias Nate Walker), but I don't see as great a bond between them as I do with her and Miles. Especially when Jason is first introduced.

Miles has charm to him, even when he doesn't believe in himself, and you can tell that he deeply cares for her. He cares for her beyond what any uncle would. I believe it is his love for Charlie that made him go back into the open again. It is his love for Charlie that, close to the Season 1 Finale, had him risk his life and react more than a little angry to someone threatening her.

Because it would be highly uncommon for a show like Revolution to delve into incest, both Miles and Charlie have their love interests. I don't believe either character having feelings for a different person means that their love is lessened. All of us can love more than on person in our lifetime. I love my fiance, but that doesn't mean I didn't love a past boyfriend.

Charlie and Jason, as mentioned previously, don't share that much chemistry but that does change later.

Miles' relationship with Rachel, Charlie's mother, is one that the audience doesn't know how it went down. All we know is that it was a short affair before The Blackout. There is a group of fans that go with the theory that Miles is actually Charlie's father. I agree with this theory since there have been so many hints that I'll be surprised if that isn't the case.

So does the thought of a father-daughter ship make me want to drop it? No. This is because it is fiction and the emotional bond they have is so great. It is always the emotional center that draws me into any ship. Sex is secondary when I decided who I think should be together. This isn't to say that I feel clean, but that I won't stop shipping Charlie and Miles if this theory ends up being true.

If you don't like the Charlie and Miles ship merely because it's an incest couple, congratulations with getting to this point. As I stated in the beginning, I don't agree with incest in real life situations but this is fiction. And my shipping heart won't be stopped!

What is up for the next Shipping Confessions? We stay in the world of Revolution and I talk about the pairing I started shipping in the first episode and my love for it grew as the series progressed.

Revolution (Season 1)

Show: Revolution

Season: 1

Episodes: 20

Created By: Eric Kripke

Released: 2012-2013

Rating: 4.5/5

Basic Plot: A group of revolutionaries confronts an authoritarian regime 15 years after an instantaneous global shutdown of all electrical devices known as the Blackout.
-------------------------------------

Season Started Out Slow
Now I started watching this show because JJ Abrams is involved (Fringe, Star Trek reboot) plus Eric Kripke (Supernatural) is credited as the show's creator. Add to that is the fact that the show is post-apocalyptic which is a favorite sub-genre of mine. However, the season started off slow. Luckily Billy Burke (playing the role of the wise-cracking and dark Miles Matheson) and the concepts of the show were able to hold me on until things really picked up. At first Charlie Matheson was very childish, but she grew up very quickly in the show. Plus the twists and turns just got wilder and wilder.

Miles Matheson
Miles is my favorite character in the show. He makes the show (even though I think the audience is supposed to identify more with Charlie) for me. Miles usually has some of the best one-liners in any given episode. When you first meet Miles he seems to just be a bartender. Later on his backstory gets expanded as well as finding out he has been involved with both Monroe and Rachel in the past. There is a group of people (including me) that believe he is actually Charlie's real father. Near the end of the Season there seemed to be big indications that the theory is true (including Nora telling Miles that Rachel needed him). I can't wait until Season 2 to find more out about this character.

Stephen King and Star Wars References
There seemed to be a fun game that was made for nerds in this show. It was picking up Star Wars and Stephen King references throughout the season. I call Aaron Pittman Chewie because he reminds me of the character, plus Aaron is very close to my real name. So talking about Aaron is much easier when I refer to him as Chewie. The Stephen King references abound from the obvious (the tower/The Dark Tower and Children of the Corn) to Miles and Charlie using aliases of King characters. My personal favorite King reference (not confirmed but just too good to be coincidence) is: Randall Flyn. For my non-King readers, Randall Flagg is in various works of Stephen King. Nine out of ten times he uses the initials RF.

Final Thoughts
I have ended up liking this series more than I thought I would. It's not the best show ever, but it picked up serious steam to make it much better than it was in the beginning. Rachel Matheson is a very complicated character and she does anything to get what she wants. She's not evil, but you should always be careful when dealing with her. How Rachel acted in the final moments of the finale broke the idea that she is all knowing. I really want to see how Chewie acts in the next Season as he played an integral part in making the Finale possible. And one last word: nanites.
