This final season is much shorter than the others and yet has a fierce momentum to it. There's less time to spend on characters and yet every moment was used wisely. This is different than Game of Thrones' final two seasons that were shorter but extremely lackluster. The only big problem with The Expanse's final season was the ending. It's not the fact that it was a cliffhanger, it was the fact that major questions were left unanswered as well as major plot points are now forever in limbo. So it didn't really come as a shock to me when I looked up and found out that this season isn't where the books end.
Filip Inaros, Marco Inaros and Naomi Nagata's son, had an interesting end to his character arc. When this season began he was a loyal son to his father's cause. While he was loyal, he still showed doubt and guilt about his actions. I thought that it was clear that there was nothing that could tear Filip from Marco's side. Heck, Naomi was unable to sway Filip and she is his mother. Yet situations kept presenting themselves in the final season that really tested Filip's resolve.
There was a theory I had that Marco Inaros was just a pawn in the protomolecule's plan. I thought that his war with the Inners was just a complex plan where his real goals were elsewhere. Such as he wanted to distract his enemies from his real goals. While I won't say if he was someone's pawn or not, he turned out to just want to wage a war with the Inners. This does make sense as like many Belters, he faced extreme discrimination and had become hateful of his current position in life. Yet his war with the Inners had much more to do with his ego than improving life for Belters. He was more than willing to kill fellow Belters by his actions or inattention.
Chrisjen Avasarala has been a complicated character in previous seasons and remains so in the final season. She is now one of the major forces that acts against Marco Inaros. While she is manipulative, she is the person you want on your side during any conflict. She is one of the few people that can put her hate against the Belters to the side when deciding how to win the war. I don't know if she ever considered Belters as anything more than a way to win a particular conflict. I mean...her husband ended up leaving her because he couldn't recognize her anymore in a previous season.
I would highly recommend The Expanse Season 6 to fans of The Expanse. I would also recommend The Expanse Season 6 to science fiction fans.
