When something is released there will be people who like it. Those people are called fans. If the show/movie/ect. is popular enough then the fans will form a group. That's basically the definition of a fandom. That fandom will then form smaller groups depending on what people like about the show/movie/ect.
Now fans can be great people. If you like something that they don't, they are fine with that. If you don't know every piece of lore, they are fine with that. They make lovely artwork that makes me decide to change my point of view on a series.
But all fans aren't great people. Some can be downright toxic. If you don't agree with them then they go to war with you. One of my fanfictions on Archive of Our Own (A03) attracted the attention of a nasty Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen (Jonerys) shipper. They felt that I was doing battle with them as I don't like Jonerys in the adaptation of G.R.R.Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. While my opinion is if someone likes Jonerys, more power to them.
The Scream franchise is known for its topical commentary. Mainly it's known for how it talks about horror movie cliches and tropes. So of course it would want to comment about toxic fans. As we have gotten so much closer over the years, it's easy to find people who are obsessed beyond reason. People who take their love of a franchise too far.
Scream, the original one, is considered a classic and held up as a great movie. Since the franchise has been going on for so long people have grown up with it. Some people take anything done to the Scream franchise extremely personally because of that. At least I assume so as I've seen toxic fans in other fandom spaces. I doubt the Scream franchise is so different that it doesn't have toxic fans.
The two killers in Scream (2022) are Richard "Richie" Kirsch and Amber Freeman. The deadly duo met on forums for the Stab series aka the in-universe versions of the Scream movies. They see kindred spirits in each other as they both feel obsession for the Stab series. Their 'love' for the Stab movies is the extremely toxic kind.
Richie and Amber are both highly upset about the current state of the Stab series. I have felt boiling hatred for how some series turned out. Such as Game of Thrones and Supernatural. I felt like both series had numerous problems for varying reasons. I'm working on a Game of Thrones fanfic to fix SOME of the problems of the final season.
But unlike me, Richie and Amber are willing to kill for their beloved movie series. Their warped view of reality is that by committing murders that the next Stab movie will be better. This due to the fact that there will be real murders to draw from.
As Richie and Amber are the villains of the film, Scream (2022) says that toxic fans aren't sane people. It's one thing to care for a series, it's another thing to have your love of something turn into obsession. The two killers could have done things through legal means to have a more faithful Stab movie. Such as they could have submitted a script or started a petition.
They could have done so many things that weren't murder.
While both Richie and Amber met grizzly fates, their plans for creating a better Stab movie were successful. They committed various murders that can serve as the basis for the next Stab movie. Now the first Stab movie was based on Gale Weathers' book about the events of Scream. So will she be writing a book about Richie and Amber's killing spree?
Nope. Gale shows a nice bit of character growth by deciding to write a book about the late Dwight 'Dewey' Riley instead.
