Mortal Kombat (Mini-Review)

Mortal Kombat is an adaptation of the much beloved and violent video game series. This movie has no connection to the films released in 1995 and 1997. The movie follows the story of Shang Tsung who wishes to cheat his way to victory during the latest Mortal Kombat as there is a prophecy foretelling that Outworld will lose the tournament due to a descendant of Hasashi being a champion. Mortal Kombat was released in 2021. It was directed by Simon McQuoid. It stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson.

One of the downsides to this movie is there is no Mortal Kombat tournament. Narratively this makes a lot of sense due to the plot of the movie being about Shang Tsung getting around the tournament so that he can claim Earthrealm. So having a tournament take place would go against his character for this movie. However, that doesn't mean everyone will feel happy about this decision. Especially near the end when a big tournament fight would've helped out.

Speaking of the ending...that was probably the weakest part of the movie. Everything seemed to be building up to an epic fight of good versus evil and then...that didn't happen. Now there was action and gore in the ending, but there was something that felt a little lackluster about it. Maybe it was because all of the heroes didn't face off against all the villains as a team. Or maybe it was because we just saw bits and pieces of a good majority of the fights near the end.

The movie does have its good points that more than makes up for its bad ones. Such as the gore and violence in the film. Characters get their limbs torn off and hearts ripped out. In the opening scene it is made very clear that this is an R rated film. As I'm not a Mortal Kombat fan, I relied on revrezner when a character's signature move was used. Or when a backstory or move was changed and if that was a good or bad thing. And, if you're wondering, he thought this adaptation was a little lackluster. My favorite contribution of his was when he accidentally made a pun ("That's cold.") during the opening sequence.

One of my favorite characters of the film was Kano. The guy was not good and that was his charm. He was well aware he was not a good person and was fine with that. He knew exactly who he was and didn't care to change. Even though he knew he had the marking that showed him to be a champion of Earthrealm, he didn't suddenly become a better person.

There is a new character called Cole Young. What importance does he have to the story? He is a descendant of Hasashi and, unlike his fellow champions, was born with the mark of a champion of Earthrealm. While I felt there could've been more to the ending, it does perfectly end Cole's story.

This movie has no post-credits scene and I can understand why. The end of the film perfectly set up a sequel which would've been the point of a post-credits scene. Though I would suggest you watch the credits as the new theme plays and the first part of the credits look cool.

I would recommend Mortal Kombat (2021) to those that enjoy the Mortal Kombat franchise and those that are looking for a good action movie.
