Mary keeps calling out to the strange figure. The figure keeps silent even as there's a great wind. Nothing seems to make this figure move. Since he isn't answering, she decides to take a risk and slowly starts to move towards the figure. Listen, if you're ever in a horror book don't go walking to obvious danger. Just run and don't stop.
As Mary gets closer the thought of the figure standing as still as a statue makes something click in her mind. A few seconds later she realizes that the figure isn't moving or answering because it's a scarecrow. Wow, isn't that embarrassing. Glad that no one else is around.
Then she suddenly realizes that it's extremely odd for someone to put a scarecrow there. Okay, I don't know whether she should continue to investigate or not. If someone is cursing her family, I doubt avoiding the scarecrow will save her. As she doesn't consult with me, she walks even closer to the scarecrow.
Ooooh! The scarecrow is Benjamin Fier!
While I am running a metaphorical victory lap, Mary is crying out in pain. She is not having a good day.
Benjamin's corpse's mouth drops open giving the impression that he's trying to talk. I'm sorry that Mary has to witness this, but this is a good death scene for the character. Even though we didn't actually get to see him die. Everything in this chapter highlights every grotesque thing that has been done to his body.
Mary turns to puke but there isn't anything to come up. She thinks about the fact that both Rebecca and Benjamin are dead. Her thoughts then turn to the possibility that every one of her family members is dead. It seems a very real possibility as the family is cursed and everyone she has seen thus far has been dead.
The chapter ends with a horrifying thought: If everyone is dead then Mary is next.
