Exploring The Betrayal (Part 18)

After a year that seemed to never end or went by too quickly, I honestly can't decide, we're finally nearing the finish line. Give yourself a pat on the back for surviving 2021!

Now let's get back to The Betrayal by R.L.Stine!

Chapter 16

Edward is in shock at what he sees. Before both him and Mary is the figure of a woman being burned on a stake while being surrounded by a sphere of fire. No matter how much he can try to deny it, he knows what he sees. Mary runs slightly faster than Edward because she's not injured.

Both have to stop when the heat becomes too great. The girl in the flames manages to have enough control over herself to stare at Edward. Not in a happy way, but one born of rage. This most likely is the Goode girl Edward betrayed and left to die. No wonder he's scared.

Yep, it is Susannah in the fire! When Edward starts to cry out, the vision of the girl he left to die goes away. All that is left is the pathetic sounds he's making.

There is a time jump to when Mary is again talking to Jeremy. She says that she has been having nightmares about the fire since it happened. Recalling the strange event causes Mary to be unable to speak and she leans into him for comfort.

Jeremy tries to tell Mary that what she saw wasn't real. A detailed vision like that being a trick of the light? Really, Jeremy? Really? Mary grows agitated as what she saw was real as Edward recognized Susannah. Something like that couldn't have happened if she was just imagining things.

Jeremy apologizes for not believing her and then asks about Edward. Mary sits a little further away from him before answering. She says that ever since that day Edward has become more distant. She then apologizes for troubling Jeremy with her problems. Honey, I'm sure he's asking all these questions to see how his curse is going.

Jeremy reassures Mary that he wants to be there for her. That hearing her problems does not bother him at all. He's more bothered by the idea that she wouldn't want to share with him. That's husband material right there. Unless he's actually William in disguise in which case...not the ideal relationship. Unless you're into kinky stuff like that.

After he asks what's in the basket, Mary says that they're sweet rolls to cheer Rebecca up. Jeremy smiles and it's creepy for some reason. Probably because I think he's William and, therefore, he's gloating about whatever cruel thing he did to Rebecca.

I guess his gestures were to beg for a sweet roll. Mary, of course, gives him one. But, the suave man he is, Jeremy says that he would prefer having Mary over a sweet roll. Wow, he is a good kisser. If this was another book, I'm sure that would have lead to a hot and steamy sex scene.

After the sensual kiss, Mary says that she had better make her way to Edward's house. Not only because she has a mission, but there are dark clouds that indicate oncoming rain and the continuing curse. Jeremy asks if Mary has told Matthew about their relationship yet.

She makes the excuse of it not being the right time. That Matthew is much too troubled to hear about her finding love. Jeremy doesn't seem to be insulted which seems like a red flag. Instead of begging Mary to tell her father, he asks if she told Matthew about the fire. She says she did and that he had a very odd reaction.

Jeremy asks what was strange about it. Mary replies that her father clutched his amulet. She says that the oddest thing was that Matthew didn't say anything to her. Jeremy agrees that her father's reaction was very odd.

Mary says she must leave before the storm. But before she leaves, she stops and asks Jeremy if he told his father about them. That isn't something he is prepared for and chokes on the roll. Mary continues to press the matter and Jeremy makes up an excuse why she can't meet his father. She believes the excuses and just bemoans the fact she can't meet his father.

The book gives a description about Edward's house that I won't get into here. I just don't know how to without copying and pasting from the book which would be plagiarism.

Once Mary starts to get closer to Edward's house, it starts to rain. She wishes that she could tell her father about Jeremy. But she knows that the news would just trouble him more. Though how it's worded in the book makes it appear like she knows something isn't right about Jeremy.

Mary's thoughts go to Benjamin waking all of them up screaming one night. It had turned out that he had become even more paralyzed during the night. Total coincidence and nothing to do with a curse.

Mary thinks that all of her family members are becoming overcome by depression. Matthew and Edward have both become less happy as of late. However, Rebecca seems to have been affected the worst in terms of depression.

As Mary approaches Edward's house, she calls out for Rebecca. But the other woman doesn't reply as it starts to rain. Mary knocks on the door and thinks about how eerily quiet the house is. Not even the hard to control Ezra is making any sound.

Did William seriously kill a kid?

Mary opens the door as she calls out for Rebecca and Ezra. I'm sure them not replying can only mean good things. Maybe they're throwing Mary a surprise party!

While Rebecca and Ezra are nowhere to be found, candles are lit and there is a fire in the fireplace. The fire boils a pot of something. It's so spooky that I can imagine a dark ritual being done. Maybe William saw to whatever happened personally.

Mary hears a creaking sound and...yeah...this isn't going to be good. Especially as soon after she notices the sound, she sees a shadow going back and forth across the floor. Yeah...I think we can all guess what happened to Rebecca.

While Mary sees what is causing the sound and shadow, the reader is not yet privy to that information. So stay tuned as Mary just screamed in joy! Yes, I am in denial of what's going to come next.
