Ghost Story (Mini-Review)

Ghost Story is the thirteenth book in Jim Butcher's the Dresden Files series. This book picks up shortly after the previous one where Harry Dresden is going to whatever lies after death. But whatever that is will have to wait as he takes on the task of finding out the identity of his killer.

It's extremely obvious that this book's purpose is to explain how Harry survived his own death. As he's the main character of the series, it'd be impossible to continue the series without him. Sure there are other characters, but his name is in the title. So is the mystery of Harry finding his own killer interesting? The whole concept of having to track down your killer is a good plot on its own. The twists and turns in the mystery makes it a solid plot for this book. There are a lot of people who want Harry dead after all. So the list of suspects is near endless.

In this book Harry again reiterates that he doesn't think of Molly Carpenter as a potential romantic/sexual partner. But the number of times he points out how hot she is and didn't like other men looking at her says a whole different story. At one point in this book Harry possesses her which involves him going into her. I'm not saying I need them to be together, but these 'jokes' are getting extremely numerous.

Mortimer "Mort" Lindquist really had his time to shine during this book. In previous books he's existed but that's about it. In this book Harry decides to go to him as he's one of the few people that can actually see ghosts. Mort goes far beyond simply helping the wizard and becomes a hero. Readers are also finally able to see the extent of his powers. Mort is more than a simple man that can talk to ghosts. The reason the ghosts hang out by his house shows an extremely kind side to the man. And by the end he has a big hero moment.

Harry is able to think about his actions during Changes, the previous book, and reflects on all the mistakes he's made. Murphy is working with Marcone and refuses to believe that Harry is dead. She holds onto this belief even after all the evidence is there to show Harry's ghost is in Chicago. Molly has been so traumatized that it looks like she is barely clinging to sanity. And yet after thinking he should have done something else, Harry knows he would do it all again to save his daughter.

It's remarked time and time again that winter is lasting too long. As all long time readers know, Queen Mab controls the cold. So if there's still snow, that means she is in Chicago for some reason. There is also a time limit she has to finish up her business. Readers eventually find out why she was risking peace to stay in the windy city.

I would recommend Ghost Story by Jim Butcher to those fans of the Dresden Files. I would also recommend Ghost Story to those who like a good fantasy mystery. I would, finally, recommend Ghost Story to those interested in ghosts.
