Rose Madder (Stephen King)

Title: Rose Madder

Author: Stephen King

Released: 1995

Rating: 5/5

Basic Plot: Rose Daniels runs away from her abusive husband. However, she isn't in the clear. Not by a long shot.

Abusive Relationships
This one makes an abusive relationship extremely real. It doesn't paint Rose as being in the wrong, nor does it paint her as being in the right. What made the book extremely creepy was that you get a glimpse into the abuser's mind.

Norman Daniels
He is the abusive husband and extremely creepy. He starts off as insane but somehow goes deeper into insanity. I like that he is a character that can't be redeemed. That makes a good villain. Norman teaches Rose things about the police that makes her stay away from them for help.

Everyone is a Jerk
Everyone in this book has a jerk streak. No one is an angel and yet not everyone is a devil. King lets you see how a bunch of characters think. It's true in the book, like in life, that people you trust have a jerk streak to them.

Final Thoughts
This is a good book. Like a good King book, it makes you feel for the characters and you feel terrified at parts. This is helped by the fact that King isn't afraid to kill off any characters. Hell, in Cujo he killed off the kid! It is very weird at times and does have references to King's other works.

Chernobyl Diaries: The Ending

I talk about the ending to this movie.

Suggest Me On Get Glue!

Chernobyl Diaries (2012)

Title: Chernobyl Diaries

Director: Bradley Parker

Starring: Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski, and Olivia Dudley

Rated: R

Released: 2012

Personal Rating: 4.5/5

Oscars: N/A

Basic Plot: Six tourists hire an extreme tour guide who takes them to the abandoned city Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. During their exploration, they soon discover they are not alone.

See This in Theaters
I know this might be hard for some of you (and impossible for those reading this after Chernobyl Diaries leaves theaters), but do it! There are things about seeing this in theaters that can't be replicated at home. I nearly crapped my pants numerous times while watching this. The fact is the theater is very dark, excellent surround sound, and a big screen. Also helped, with my personal viewing, was that revrezner and I were the only ones in the theater.

No Boobies Shown
Natalie needed to show her twins. No one can argue with me against that and win. It has an R rating and they were distracting while IN HER SHIRT! If you haven't seen the film yet, you don't know what you're missing! I know it'd be fanservice, but it'd be a fanservice I wouldn't mind. Nor would many others who like the female form.

The Atmosphere
For a horror movie, atmosphere can make or break it. The atmosphere makes this film. I can forgive nearly everything for me crapping my pants at numerous times. At first I thought it'd be fun with me being a little scared. By the end I was wishing for it to end soon because I was so scared.

Final Thoughts
I can't understand the hate for this movie. I really can't. It's a very well done movie. However, people who live there have been in protest against it. I can only take the end scene as a reason for their complaints. Anything else doesn't make sense to me. It does base the film on real events, but that helps to make it creepy without having to do much. And again: SEE THIS FILM IN THEATERS WHILE YOU CAN!

Hatfields & McCoys (2012)

Title: Hatfields & McCoys

Director: Kevin Reynolds

Starring: Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton, and Tom Berenger

Rated: Not Rated

Released: 2012

Personal Rating: 4.5/5

Oscars: N/A

Basic Plot: Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy, close friends and comrades until near the end of the Civil War, return to their neighboring homes to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments.

As a TV Movie
TV movies usually always turn out to be shit compared to theatrical movies. One of the exceptions is The Road to Perdition, which I swore was made for theaters. HBO making a good TV Movie, though, isn't hard to imagine. But the History channel making a good movie is like the History channel not making an Ancient Aliens series. Hatfields & McCoys has a very cinematic feel to it. Making me want to get this on blu-ray.

The Music
The music adds a very good feel to this movie. Makes the feeling of that long ago time period come back. Don't get me wrong, the acting and effects are good. But the music is a small part of this that adds a lot.

The Feud
I can't pinpoint the exact moment the feud begins. Of course at the beginning both are friends. And all of a sudden they hate each other. What makes the feud a little hard to follow is that there are so many characters. That could just be me not remembering characters names. Then I get names that some people would say are offensive. I call the one that gets hanged The Retard (in my defense, he is technically a retard or some lower IQ wise).

Final Thoughts
This movie is amazing. It made me cry at a few points and it takes quite a movie to do that. I'm not sure how historically correct this is (remember it is the History channel where there is Bigfoot and ancient aliens), but it is still a good film. I made up a drinking game (that I never actually did due to revrezner telling me I'd kill myself doing it) where you take a shot every time anyone shoots and kills another person (doesn't include the Civil War scenes).

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

Title: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Director: Tomas Alfredson

Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy

Rated: R

Released: 2011

Personal Rating: 3.5/5

Oscars: Nominated for 3

Basic Plot: In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6.

I hated the flashbacks in this film. Not because of what they show, but because the fact that they're flashbacks isn't easy to tell. This made getting plot points a little hard. Nothing against flashbacks, but you have to make sure that the audience knows what scenes are flashbacks.

Get The Wrong One Out
A name that cast and crew referred to this movie as was Get the Wrong One Out. This was a reference to both finding the mole AND the director's previous film. If you want to know, I haven't seen Let the Right One In yet.

Has An Old Timey Spy Feeling
One of the reasons I enjoyed this film was the fact that it appeared that it was made back in the day. The music, font, and other things made it appear that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a space time anomaly. It has the quality of a film of today but the feeling of an old film.

Final Thoughts
This isn't a bad film, it is enjoyable. If you don't like slow films you won't like this one. However, if you want a good feeling film (quality wise), this is a good film to see. This movie is a remake and based on a book of the same name. I haven't seen or read previous incarnations. Though I believe one character that is gay in this film was straight in a previous incarnation.
