Halloween Ends (Mini-Review)

Halloween Ends is the conclusion to David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy. It is four years since Micheal Myers has been seen and people have tried to move on. Laurie Strode seeks a life of peace by living with her granddaughter and writing a memoir. Allyson Nelson continues to live in Haddonfield to help Laurie, her grandmother. Corey Cunningham struggles with the guilt over accidentally killing a kid while the town treats him as a monster. When Micheal Myers appears, Corey starts to lose the fight against his inner demons. Halloween Ends was released in 2022. It was directed by David Gordon Green. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, and James Jude Courtney.

There are no mid or post-credits in Halloween Ends. However, the music played during the credits is awesome. For the music alone I would suggest staying for the credits. Plus look out for the guy with the last name Porn. I'm not kidding. If you're a writer watching any credits reassures you that you don't need to spend forever figuring out a character's name.

Something that may bother people is the fact it is nearly fifty minutes until Micheal Myers appears. Plus the film ignores him, for the majority of the runtime, unless it is for Corey's storyline. I can understand the annoyance but it really does help build up tension and also helps to show that Micheal is still recovering from the end of Halloween Kills.

I really wish that Allyson was the one having to deal with feeling like a killer. I wish that either she had stayed evil or had found the strength to turn away from that path. It would have helped viewers feel more invested as she has been around since Halloween (2018). Bringing Corey, a new character in, feels like the director was playing it safe. Since Corey is in the movie he can explore how experiencing a horrific event and the fallout can utterly change a person for the worse. The third movie of a trilogy, or the end of a series, should be when anything can happen.

That being said...I really felt for Corey. The death at the beginning is very impactful. He is babysitting Jeremy who is a little jerk of a kid. He ends up playing a prank on Corey that goes wrong as it sends the babysitter into a panic. The way everyone sees Corey as a killer makes him become a hermit, only talking with his parents. His father is a good guy, but his mother is horrible. The first thing you want to do is pity him as he doesn't look like there's a dangerous bone in his body. As the movie continues you see him do worse and worse things, but at the same time they're understandable. He is finally standing up for himself and Allyson, the one he cares about, just not in a...healthy way.

The kills in this movie feel like they mean something. I found myself loving the gore but also feeling conflicted. The people that died tended to be bad people but...something stopped me from feeling outright gleeful.

I would recommend Halloween Ends to fans of the Halloween franchise. I would highly recommend Halloween Ends to those seeking a good horror movie.
