News of Jak’s discovery finds its way to the wrong people.
Chased across the country of Greater California by the Truth Police (a paramilitary group set up long ago), Jak finds hope in groups of people he thought were only legend, the Wanderers, peoples who have never lived in a Fieldworks community.
Jak’s quest for Truth and survival costs him more than he could have ever imagined.
Talking With D. W. Wolf
What was the inspiration for writing Fieldworks 7?
I was in the lounge room speaking to two of my sons. On the television was a story that made me question humankind's direction of late, the rampant disinformation of social media, and all that. Then, as the boys walked out of the room, I happened to glance at the basement door, which is partially concealed because of the young grandchildren who come over. In that moment, Fieldworks 7 was born.
What was the writing process like for Fieldworks 7?
Once I began to write the story Fieldworks 7, it seemed to take on a life of its own. The hardest part was to "polish" the manuscript, remove all the small (and large) errors.
What music did you listen to while writing Fieldworks 7?
At times, I listened to Bob Dylan; songs such as "like a rolling stone" definitely set the mood for Jak's quest.
What was your favorite scene in Fieldworks 7 to write?
When Jak first discovers the basement and enters, finding the "deep time tapes." That scene definitely appealed to me; it reminded me of the mystery of adventure.
What was the hardest scene in Fieldworks 7 to write?
Writing the ending to this story tugged on my emotional strings a bit; we all end up carrying the memories of those who have left us.
