Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Prologue-Chapter 3) [Reposted]
Well here is the first stop on my journey of re-discovery. I am starting with The Andalite Chronicles since the list I am using lists this first. #1 The Invasion was the first Animorphs book published, but the majority of The Andalite Chronicles takes place before that. This book follows the history of Prince Elfangor (full name Prince Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul) who was the Andalite who gave the Animorphs the ability to morph.

Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Chapters 44-49)
Chapter 44
Elfangor is saved by Loren throwing a dead Morton at the live one. He then barely manages to block the visser's tail-blade. After Loren kills the Mortron tangled in her hair Elfangor decides that humans are far from weak. Though that is the impression he thinks most would get.
Elfangor tells the visser it's time for a one on one tail-blade fight. The visser replies with the threat of what will happen if they are left in this new reality. That they'll be returned to where they had been before using the Time Matrix. Elfangor replies that he'll just be happy that the visser will be dead.
Loren says that she had told Elfangor that the visser was afraid to fight him one on one. Elfangor remarks that he now agrees with her.
The visser makes a threatening remark and then walks away. Loren says that they won't see him again, but Elfangor says that not true. It's been made mentioned of previously in the book, but it seems that Elfangor might believe in superstitions more than he lets on. Just how many times does he talks about superstitions and then adds "I don't believe"?
Loren asks what now as time is really speeding up. Seems that now years are going by in less than a blink of an eye. Elfangor says that there can only be one person directing the Time Matrix this time so the same thing doesn't happen.
Loren asks about going to the Andalite home world. Elfangor disagrees as he has shamed himself and he now knows his people can do horrible things in the name of victory. So what would the Andalites do with the Time Matrix? Loren says that sometimes good people do bad things. Elfangor replies that if the Andalites win the war with the Time Matrix they won't be Andalites any longer.
Elfangor decides to go to Earth and hide the Time Matrix there.
While this is a great discussion on its own it shows that some parts of Elfangor don't change. While his eyes have been opened and he knows that the government isn't to be trusted, he still has an idealized version of what his species should be.
So this all took place in a week?
Loren talks about erasing the timeline and saving Arbron and Alloran. Elfangor points out the two of them would never have met then. Plus they don't know the effects that will happen if they change history. He does point out that it's possible the Yeerks would be able to get a hold of the Time Matrix.
Loren then points out the problem of her being a few years older. Elfangor says just to make every one think her being eighteen is her real age.
It's great the Elfangor admits to not knowing what's going to happen.
Chapter 45
It is now three years later.
Elfangor has run away from the war with the Yeerks. Isn't surprising considering how much guilt and shame he gathered up in previous events. Elfangor acquired multiple humans to form a single human morph. He then became a nothlit.
I would say he's a coward but he's been through so much. He figures that he's caused such a mess of things that the Andalites were better off without him. Elfangor hasn't had a guide unless you count Alloran. And that crazed Andalite was too harsh for what the aristh needed.
It's funny that Elfangor majored physics in college. Add to that the fact that he had to pretend to be dumber than he is since some stuff he has known since childhood.
Elfangor misses his body but remarks that the sense of taste is worth it. Plus there is Loren. And he's now seen what the Time Matrix can do and is even more convinced that it should never be touched again.
Elfangor finished college at an accelerated rate and remarks that no matter what he did he was bored. There is nothing really intellectually challenging once you go to a more primitive society.
Name dropping Bill (aka Bill Gates) and Steve (aka Steve Jobs)? Didn't remember that part.
Loren and Elfangor see Chapman. His memory is erased but it still spooks Elfangor. Chapman should've been sucked into the Black Hole. Oh, you silly Ellimist you. Elfangor doesn't know how Chapman survived and feels like something is watching him.
Elfangor says the most important thing he did as a human was to marry Loren. AW!
Elfangor still wants to be an Andalite as he dreams about being back in his original body. Poor, poor baby. He also denies that he thinks about his own people a lot.
Elfangor took the name Alan Fangor to fit in better.
Elfangor arrives home before Loren one day. Loren was most likely at the hospital. Elfangor remarks that he thinks human doctors are barbaric. He is also surprised at how easy it is for him to walk on two legs.
A man is waiting for the nothlit and Elfangor is shocked. The man says Elfangor's true name and says this isn't his home. Oh, come on, being with Loren is home for Elfangor. In another sense, though, the nothlit's true place is fighting with his people against the Yeerks.
And it turns out this man is an Ellimist. 'One of those you call Ellimists'. I always took this to mean that the Ellimists are a species. And having a species like the Ellimist makes me so happy because it seems so cool...and then we get the Ellimist as a singular character.
Chapter 46
Elfangor doesn't really believe it's an Ellimist. The creature proves it's an Ellimist by knowing things a regular human wouldn't know. It's here that Elfangor learns that Visser Thirty-Two has become Visser Three. The nothlit says that the Yeerk should be dead. The Ellimist says that Elfangor is naive if he thinks he understands time and the way things should be.
The Ellimist also says that Visser Three is a terrible enemy to his people aka Andalites. Elfangor replies that humans are his people now. It's here that Elfangor realizes this Ellimist erased Chapman's memories and brought him back.
Elfangor soon says that he isn't concerned with far off space battles. This Ellimist brings up the point that the Yeerks will come to Earth.
Why didn't Elfangor think of this before? My only thought of how this could be logical is that he's in a huge state of denial. He ran away from the war and the only way to think he's safe is to believe the Yeerks will always stay far away. As we've seen Elfangor is scarred from his first mission that went horribly wrong, so this does fit.
This Ellimist continues that the Yeerks are in orbit right then. Elfangor looks out the window for signs of Loren but then realizes that is stupid. A being that can control space and time wants to talk with him, they won't be interrupted.
Elfangor tells this Ellimist that he would only cause more harm than good if he were to fight the Yeerks. He brings up that he tried being a hero and failed. This Ellimist brings up the fact that he kept the Time Matrix from either side. Elfangor then says that he doomed Arbron to life as a Taxxon and let Alloran become the first Andalite Controller. This Ellimist brings up that Elfangor refused to destroy a defenseless enemy and is proving wise beyond his species' intelligence.
This part of the discussion seems like Elfangor is telling his sob story and expecting pity. But this Ellimist is having none of that bullshit.
Elfangor goes on to say that no one needs him. This Ellimist says this isn't true. The nothlit asks what this Ellimist wants and the being replies nothing. Elfangor says that bullshit. This Ellimist says they don't interfere but they repair.
Elfangor quickly goes WHAT THE FUCK?! SO DO YOU INTERFERE OR DON'T YOU?! MAKE UP YOUR MIND!
This Ellimist brings up that time has been changed because of Elfangor's meddling. Battles that should have been won have been lost. Elfangor brings up the point he has a life here now. This Ellimist brings up the fact that his life on Earth is only possible because of using the Time Matrix. The Ellimist then brings up Ax aka Elfangor's brother.
Wait...Ax doesn't exist in this timeline? What the...excuse me for a few hours as I get over the shock of reading this.
Elfangor is rightfully furious and says that this Ellimist is lying. This Ellimist repeats his offer. After a little more talk the being brings up that Elfangor won't be able to protect Loren when Visser Three comes for her. He breaks down and seems to edge very near to accepting this Ellimist's offer.
This Ellimist promises nothing concrete but says that what can't be done now will be possible if Elfangor agrees. He later states that Loren will not remember Elfangor but he'll still have the memories.
I can't...this is what neither Elfangor or Loren wanted! The lovebirds discussed how they wanted to remember each other multiple times throughout the book! I just can't deal with this pain.
So Elfangor has agreed to what this Ellimist has offered. The nothlit attempts a smile when he says this Ellimist said something about a battle.
Chapter 47
Elfangor now sees how Ellimists see. He remarks that the Time Matrix allowed a little glimpse into an Ellimist's viewpoint. Elfangor describes a new sense but he can barely understand it himself.
Elfangor talks about how the Ellimist looks. He talks about it being one of a species. Talks about this Ellimist not being the only one of its kind. I like this idea of a species of Ellimists. This is what I wanted to see expanded on in the Animorphs series. Also a reason why I remember not being super excited about The Ellimist Chronicles. But I'll get to that one day...
Elfangor sees his brother. He admits to Arbron, at least how he is seeing him now, that the aristh he didn't like has become the hero he always wanted to be. Elfangor sees something he doesn't understand happening to Loren. This Ellimist tells the aristh that he is a father.
At this point Elfangor gets pissed off. I'm sure I know what language this book would've used if it had been for adults.
So Elfangor's son is still his own but Loren won't remember it? Mindfuck that is.
This Ellimist says that Elfangor is now where/when he's supposed to be. I bet this all powerful being just wants to bitch slap this Andalite.
Elfangor watches his son's line connect with his brother's and then to five humans. He remarks that the Ellimist does interfere. He asks if this is all a game for the Ellimists.
This Ellimist uses the term "we" to describe those playing a game against an old dark power. As no one else in the series is shown to be playing with Crayak, it is shown here that the Ellimists are a species.
This book shows my favorite showcasing of the Ellimists. Hands down.
Elfangor is suddenly back in his original body.
Chapter 48
Elfangor is greeted by what he calls 'chaotic thought-speak'. He is now in a battle. He can tell that his species are about to lose this battle. But the Andalites aren't backing down. Well...the Dome ship is going to self-destruct very soon in a last ditch effort to cause damage.
Elfangor sees a Blade ship.
When Elfangor decides to join in he forgets to call himself an aristh. And who would blame him? He's spent a few years away from Andalite society and ran away.
The captain is surprised Elfangor is there and he promises to tell the captain the story later. He then communicates with the Yeerks. Asking to speak with the visser. Elfangor uses the time to harass Visser Three and slam his fighter into the visser's Blade ship.
Soon after Elfangor pulled off that move, reinforcements came and the Yeerks retreated. When Elfangor wakes up in the Dome ship he is called a hero. He then thinks of what he's going to tell the captain. In the end he decides to tell the captain everything but the location of the Time Matrix.
The captain replies that Elfangor's story can never become public because the Andalites need heroes. The captain also says that he doesn't think Elfangor did a horrible thing by disobeying Alloran's orders. He recounts that Alloran used to be a joker but that war changes people either for the better or for the worse. He says that Elfangor was doing what Alloran would've done when he was younger and wasn't so tainted by war.
When the captain asks, Elfangor agrees to fights.
Before I stop talking about this chapter: I want to hug the captain so hard for forgiving Elfangor for running away.
Chapter 49
Elfangor says the war with the Yeerks has come to a standstill. He wonders if it's because the Ellimists and the games they're playing or if there's another reason.
He also says a Zero-space rift had opened up so that it took longer to get to Earth.
Elfangor finally came to Earth because the rest of his species had figured out that the planet had been targeted. The Prince finally got so desperate that he went to get the Time Matrix. But by the time he arrived he was too weak. The weapon was no buried underneath concrete (the location had originally been a forest).
Five children came and saw him. He recognizes his son. Tobias! Elfangor breaks Seerow's Kindness and gives the teenagers the ability to morph.
Father and son have one chat where Elfangor asks what happened to Loren. Tobias said he doesn't know but assumes she's dead. I'm not tearing up...
Elfangor says that his friends are his family now.
As Elfangor dies he knows that Tobias is much stronger than he suspects.
He leaves one word for his people: Hope.
Reading this book after such a long time was a good experience overall. I love seeing how Elfangor evolves and adore his relationship with Loren. This book does not treat its readers like they can't understand things. It goes for a very dark tone and tells a good story. Someone brought up the fact that we don't get to see why Elfangor is a hero to his people. But ramming the Blade ship is a good start.
The next book in the Animorphs series I will be Re-Reading will be

Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Chapters 37-43)
Chapter 37
Elfangor sees that the different parts are all mismatched and so the whole reality appears extremely odd. Elfangor asks where he is but in the last chapter he had decided it was a whole new reality.
He goes into one of the places where there's a different part. There are these tongue creatures that are odd and creepy. Elfangor describes it as a "fantasy-monster land". Yep, this is the Yeerk home world alright. It seems that Elfangor is trying to comfort himself by saying that this version of the Yeerk home world is only Visser Thirty-Two's version of it.
Elfangor then races to find Loren under one of the Earth sky patches. He eats as he runs. Lucky bastard that's able to eat on the go like that!
Elfangor and Loren meet up! Aw! They hug!
Loren remarks on the landscape. Elfangor then suggests they walk around. Loren correctly guesses that Elfangor is afraid of Visser Thirty-Two.
Loren is able to state simple plot points and Elfangor is amazed because he thinks you'd need to know about physics to get it. Loren then states, upon Elfangor asking her, that the Time Matrix is a device where every one using it has to agree where/when they're going. With three people steering it, it didn't drive them any place and created this new reality instead.
The chapter ends with the love birds looking at Visser Thirty-Two but he isn't alone. But we don't know with who or what.
Chapter 38
Visser Thirty-Two has his two monstrosity on wheels. They're really odd looking and even Elfangor doesn't know what they are.
Loren tells the visser that he has the manner of a slug no matter which body he possesses. They taunt each other and Visser Thirty-Two says that Loren is afraid of him. Loren replies by throwing a rock at Visser Thirty-Two. He is surprised and Elfangor is very impressed.
The visser recovers himself and sends his two pets (Jarex and Larex) after the duo.
Elfangor stays in place because of his fascination with the creatures. The visser explains that his pets are Mortrons. The Yeerks thought that they'd be able to enslave the species but that didn't end up being the case. Jarex and Larex are the two he brought back as pets. This is odd as it shows that Visser Thirty-Two has a slight friendly side to him. Or at least a side that likes killer pets.
Elfangor quickly grows bored of the visser's speech.
Oh, looks like the Mortons are two creatures in one. And one part can fly! Elfangor just slices one of the Mortrons into two pieces. He quickly does the same to the second Mortron.
Shit, they regenerate. Visser Thirty-Two uses the moment to gloat some more.
Elfangor admits he can outrun them to Loren but says he won't because she can't. Loren's plan is to ride Elfangor. You're enjoying that, aren't you, little Andalite aristh?
Elfangor is surprised and Loren shouts for him to just run. He does so.
Chapter 39
Elfangor and Loren are able to easily escape. The visser does not pursue them but Elfangor knows it hasn't been the last time he'll see that particular Yeerk.
How does Elfangor not know about a street? Okay, they might not have them in Andalite society but surely he must know the basic premise.
Loren tells him it's a street and Elfangor does his version of a mental facepalm. He says that it makes perfect sense.
Loren says that soon she'll be at her house and Elfangor can meet her mother. Elfangor remembers how his parents weren't at his scoop and fears the same for Loren. Of course he didn't seem to focus on his parents so it's easy to imagine Loren's mother being in this reality as she's been thinking about her a lot.
Elfangor thinks that lawns are for growing grass for eating. Never mind that he's seen that other species eat different things and I don't believe humans have been shown to have a diet of mainly grass.
Elfangor is mystified by steps and I don't mind it as it doesn't seem like Andalite architecture contains steps (sort of hard for a four hoofed creature).
Yes, Elfangor, the carpet is not edible.
And Loren's mother is there! Okay, what's the bad news?
Elfangor thinks eye color is a sign of age. That's funny and isn't stupid at all. He's only seen two young humans. Though how he can't tell the sexes is odd as he's seen both a male and female (and this book doesn't deal with the topic of transgender or intersex people).
Ah...and the problem is that this version of Loren's mother isn't the real one. She keeps saying things like "I like meeting your friends." and "You think you kids invented Andalites?". This is both funny and scary. It shakes Loren up and she yells at this version that it isn't real. This version then tells Loren to go to her room.
Elfangor calmly explains to Loren that she made this version out of her mind and that's why this version knows about Andalites. Loren doesn't take kindly to this and runs up to her room after yelling this is all Elfangor's fault. If only Chapman could hear her now...
Elfangor asks where Loren's room is and this version of Loren's mother kindly tells him where it is. Adding to leave the door open a crack as that's the rule when Loren has Andalites over.
Chapter 40
Elfangor realizes he needs to give Loren some time alone but also knows that he can't let her wander off.
Elfangor doesn't get the point of stairs but remarks that it does allow the house to have a second story.
Love that Elfangor describes books at a 'primitive computer file'. He calls the sheets artificial skins which is odd. I could get clothing but not sheets.
Loren was able to only recreate part of a book (writing, the book is there just not the words).
Elfangor finally finds Loren playing softball. Loren ignores Elfangor at first. She finally talks to him about softball. Elfangor states that she is upset and she gets angry over that statement.
Elfangor says this is even odd to him and Loren agrees. Elfangor gives her a picture he got from her room.
Elfangor tells Loren shit we already know (that the Time Matrix created this new reality) because all three of them were imagining different places.
Loren asks why some things are more complete than others. Elfangor replies that trees are simple but sentient creatures are far more complicated. This part of the book, Elfangor's descriptions here, are worth you reading it yourself. Don't want to spend all my time on it.
Loren reaches the edge of this small universe (want to say "pocket universe") and yells when she can't pass the edge.
Loren says she wants to go home and Elfangor reminds her that Visser Thirty-Two is out there. This doesn't worry Loren.
Chapter 41
Elfangor and Loren explore the edges of their new universe. He remarks that the Andalite home world and Earth aren't all that different, but the Yeerk home world parts are just plain disgusting.
Loren says that it's funny that she brought her school building into this new reality but forgot to bring a grocery store.
Turns out Loren and Chapman were given liquified grass to eat by the Andalites.
Suddenly they run into a McDonald's and Loren is at first happy and then becomes horrified. The guy she created in this universe doesn't have eyes. As well as more lovely OH MY GOD WHY AM I READING THIS descriptions. Turns out he's based off of someone that works at McDonald's that Loren knows and always noticed his acne.
Elfangor tells her that the food may be real and she needs to eat human food. I think that's the first time McDonald's has been said to be a healthy choice. Elfangor remarks that he doesn't like the smell of the food.
Elfangor remarks on watching people eat. I agree with him. Whenever I eat with someone I have to be eating until they finish. Yes, this has caused me problems in the past.
Elfangor has figured out that this universe is a multidimensional pattern. Specifically a hyper spiral and the Time Matrix is at the center of it.
Loren figures out that's why the visser hasn't been after them. He's been looking for the Time Matrix.
Chapter 42
Elfangor and Loren get closer to the center.
Loren remarks that Earth and the Andalite home world are very similar. But remarks about the lack of cities. Saying that the Andalites are technological advanced and so must have cities.
Elfangor says that long ago Andalites used to have cities. But his species had evolved as free-roaming herd animals. Then it became that each family made its own Scoop (aka home) and held their own grazing land. Technology increased and Andalites started living in cities. But they found that didn't work so they went to living like before. Each Scoop made different parts.
Loren remarks that their two civilizations aren't that different. Elfangor has to remind her that he no longer can erase her memory. He also says that he wouldn't erase her memory even if he could. So adorable!
He says that he wouldn't because he didn't want to be the only one to remember it all and that he wouldn't want her to forget him. Loren replies that she cares about him too. He is surprised as he didn't say those exact words but he does care about her.
Elfangor comments that the area belongs to a friend of his. He also says that he doesn't want his friend to be there as he's seen what's happened to people Loren has brought to this universe.
So Elfangor's hoofs are growing? That's weird and I shouldn't say that because of what has happened previously in the book. What is hoof growth against living asteroids?
Loren looks at where the Time Matrix should be and remarks that it's impossible to get to. Elfangor replies it's the only way to get to it.
They hold hands as they jump into the tornado.
Chapter 43
Elfangor thinks briefly of guessing what is inside the vortex. But then he remembers that it's better not to guess what will happen next. Way back when he was called to see the captain on the bridge of the Dome ship was the last time he had been sure of anything.
And another drugged description, this time of going inside the vortex.
So Elfangor doesn't know about hurricanes? I can understand, sort of, but Jupiter's red spot is a storm and so I'd think hurricanes happen on other planets.
Elfangor and Loren both realize they need to get to the Time Matrix fast as time is really speeding up. This begs the question of how Visser Thirty-Two can still be alive. Remember that Yeerks have to exit their hosts and feed every three days. Now he could exit his host and feed from a Yeerk pool, but I highly doubt Alloran would wait for the Yeerk to finish. But of course this particular Yeerk needs to stay alive.
I misplaced the scene of where Elfangor tells Loren to stay still and let him cut her nails with his tail blade. It was the second time it happened and not the first.
The visser says to do another truce and Elfangor points out why he doesn't believe the Yeerk.
Loren points out that the visser is afraid to take on Elfangor one on one. Elfangor as a specific adversary and not just because he's an enemy. The visser denies that.
The visser sends his four pets after Elfangor and then attacks the aristh.
Elfangor feels overwhelmed with two sets of creatures attacking him.
Elfangor looks over at Loren and sees her winning. This gives him hope. It is hope that's short lived as he has to make a choice between blocking a tail-blade or a Mortron.

Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Chapters 28-36)
Chapter 28
Loren is mystified by Zero-space. Elfangor mentions that he has explained it to her numerous times and figures she is just "making conversation". And he doesn't blame her as she had to endure being controlled by a Yeerk. Elfangor says it's one of the worst experiences any creature can endure. He remarks that she is acting better than he expected her to. Is it just me or does being infested by a Yeerk sound an awful lot like rape? Just by Elfangor's description.
It turns out that Loren's Yeerk had been at the end of its cycle. Every three days a Yeerk has to feed by absorbing Kandrona rays in a Yeerk pool. Elfangor made a deal with the Yeerk to be put into hibernation instead of dying. He then shoots the Yeerk into real space and there is a chance that it'll be picked up one day. However, he also makes mention that he made sure to release the Yeerk in a spot where it'd most likely die. Elfangor admits it's not what he'd have done before but said he just doesn't care. He admits that Alloran's way is correct but he learned too late. War does change people in horrible ways.
Chapman harasses Elfangor about not knowing where to go. It turns out Elfangor has been changed so much by this one mission that he doesn't think he can ever go back home to his parents. He tells the two humans that he has basically disgraced himself so he is afraid of being reprimanded.
Chapman continues to harass Elfangor and says he was right in siding with the Yeerks. He tries to make Elfangor use the Time Matrix. This is a bad idea as the Yeerks had put a tracking beacon on the Jahar and Sub-Visser Seven had left instructions for Chapman in case something went wrong.
Elfangor then realizes he can spring a trap. Loren asks if she'll ever get back to Earth. As I don't have any real feelings for home, I would find traveling the stars better than what I have now. In fact, since I was a little kid I have dreamed of one day living on Mars.
Chapman uses the opportunity to take another jab at Elfangor.
Chapter 29
Elfangor explains what will happen and then asks how he can tie up Chapman effectively. Loren gags Chapman and it takes Elfangor a few moments to understand that it's to make sure he won't talk. Loren says that it's sad that it won't hurt him. Ah, I can feel all the Chapman love in the Jahar!
Loren asks Elfangor if he's tempted to use the Time Matrix and Elfangor asks if she wishes that she'd never been picked up by the Skrit Na. Loren says no because she wouldn't want to ever not have met him. AW! I am having so many feels right now. It hurts!
Elfangor makes mention of the pictures he found in the Skrit Na ship and asks about where Loren lives. It turns out that Elfangor had been looking at a cigarette ad. He asks why humans smoke in beautiful places but Loren is laughing too hard. They both end up laughing.
Loren asks why Elfangor doesn't want to use the Time Matrix. He mentions that time is extremely complicated but adds that he's really afraid of the Ellimists. Ellimists are god-like beings that created the Time Matrix. Some Andalites believe the race died out and other Andalites believe that they just moved onto a higher state of being.
Loren states that the existence of the Time Matrix proves that Ellimists are real. Elfangor says if they are real then they have powers normal beings can't dream of.
And then Elfangor talks about the different dimensions and why an Ellimist would be bad to piss off. He also mentions that whatever happened to the Ellimists could also happen to them. This is one of my fondest memories from this book. I started to read it and it took me back to my childhood. Don't know why, but it did.
As they get ready to leave Zero-Space, Elfangor sets up a date with Loren. So cute!
Chapter 30
Arriving at the nebula amazes both Loren and Elfangor. Though Elfangor pretends he's not amazed and it's a normal sight for him to see. Elfangor remarks that what will make this scene really remarkable is when the StarSword arrives.
Loren gets sad when Elfangor says that Earth is hundred of light years away. Again with the importance of home.
The StarSword is under attack. Well this is off to a good start!
Elfangor has a lock on the StarSword and heads off towards it. Elfangor spots the StarSword but things seem off. Loren points out what is attacking the Dome ship. The asteroids are attacking!
Chapter 31
Cue Loren saying that the asteroids are alive and Elfangor going that that's impossible. Yes, something so weird has happened that the human is more accepting of events than an alien is.
The StarSword fires its main shredders but even that does nothing. This scares Elfangor as the main shredders are very powerful. A fighter pilot is killed by one of the living asteroids.
It is Loren that figures out the energy is what attracts the living asteroids. Elfangor sends a message to the Dome ship saying what Loren knew. Soon after the Yeerks arrive.
A Blade ship comes into view and Elfangor believes he senses Sub-Visser Seven. He also admits he doesn't usually believe in psychic things. This part seems to say that Elfangor and Sub-Visser Seven were destined to meet and become enemies. That whatever happened they would always meet.
Sub-Visser Seven contacts Elfangor directly. The aristh has to remind himself that it isn't Alloran any longer. Before Elfangor switches things on so that the Yeerk can see and hear him, he tells Loren to pretend she's still a Controller.
So Sub-Visser Seven is now Visser Thirty-Two? I thought he'd go to Visser Three because that's what I'm used to calling him.
Loren asks if the plan worked and Elfangor says, [If it doesn't, neither of us is going to the Yosemite,]
Loren then remarks that it's a bad time for Elfangor learn how to joke as they're going to the depths of Hell.
Elfangor is waiting carefully for the right moment to shoot the Blade ship. Chapman shoots Elfangor with the shredder (that is turned on its lowest setting) and then starts to brag.
Loren says that she's had it with Chapman right before she kicks him in the balls! You are an awesome lady, Loren! Loren stuns Chapman.
And the chapter ends with the Jahar about to be boarded.
Chapter 32
Elfangor tells Loren to shoot and she hits a Hork-Bajir. But then an Andalite arm appears. Visser Thirty-Two shoots Loren and she falls into Elfangor! And now Visser Thirty-Two has entered the Jahar! Well, this is going to go great. I should probably get out now.
Elfangor thinks he's about to die and swings his tail-blade at the console and he shoots the Blade ship at point blank range. You are awesome, Elfangor! The hatch is torn open and lots of chaos because of that ensues! Yeah, Visser Thirty-Two, Elfangor is a great source of agitation for you!
A living asteroid attacks the Jahar and Elfangor believes he's going to die. While he tries to fix the situation he wonders why he should bother. Arbron was dead and Alloran was worse than dead. So why should he even bother to fight?
My baby needs a hug!
Chapter 33
As this is the beginning of Part 3 of the book, there is a little mention of how Elfangor's situation is worsening and then a recap of what has happened so far. Complete with Elfangor bemoaning his current situation.
Is it coincidence that Elfangor snaps out of his depression when he sees Loren floating around lifelessly?
Elfangor is thinking of using the Time Matrix. He doesn't say it by name but he mentions Arbron's suicide attempt and so it's pretty clear what Elfangor is talking about.
Elfangor has trouble reaching the panel but Loren helps him. You go girl! Elfangor is impressed.
Air returns and Elfangor mentions it hurts but that it's a good kind of pain. Elfangor tells Loren that humans must be strong. And Loren replies that the same is true of Andalites. So much good love!
Elfangor explains what a black hole is but Loren replies that she learned about them at school. The Andalite is surprised that humans know of black holes. While Elfangor compliments humans a lot, he seems to fail to realize what kind of technology is needed to learn about deep space. Though the aristh is not big on technology, which has been brought up a lot previously in the book.
Visser Thirty-Two speaks and Elfangor has to remind himself it's not Alloran. So we are given even more descriptions of how horrible it is to be controlled by a Yeerk. The visser correctly guesses that Elfangor is thinking of tail-fighting him, but he tries to dissuade the Andalite from doing so. Elfangor replies with a taunt and the visser brings up all of Elfangor's insecurities. Visser Thirty-Two then brings up using the Time Matrix and so my guess what Elfangor was after was wrong...
Elfangor brings up why that won't work but the visser replies that they'll just have to work together. A Yeerk and Andalite working together. This will work out so nicely!
Chapter 34
Visser Thirty-Two elaborates on his plan. Elfangor, of course, doesn't trust him but agrees to it as along as the visser holds the rope. The visser replies that Elfangor will just use the Time Matrix for himself. Elfangor slips up in his reply and says 'Loren' instead of 'the humans', but quickly corrects himself. The visser catches Elfangor's slip and replies that the Andalite is telling the truth. He adds that he'll kill Loren if Elfangor betrays him.
Elfangor talks about the air hoods and that he didn't tell Loren what would happen if the air ran out.
Loren uses sarcasm and Elfangor doesn't get it. This would make sense if Andalites didn't have humor. But, through Arbron, we can tell they do. It just might be that Elfangor doesn't use humor that much and/or he can't recognize sarcasm.
Elfangor takes a look at the black hole and then imagines himself getting sucked in. He has to remind himself to focus.
Oh, great, the Jahar is spinning so the job is harder.
Elfangor makes mention of how hard it is for an untrained person to move in zero gravity. He is trained so he knows what to do.
Elfangor gets the Time Matrix inside the Jahar and I'm just waiting for the betrayal. It seems longer when you're waiting for stuff like this.
Chapter 35
When Elfangor gets back inside he realizes that Loren is suffering because Andalites and humans can't breathe the same air. This seems like a minor plot hole as humans have been seen on the Taxxon home world, a Skrit Na ship, and Andalite ships breathing just fine. So what is different about the air hood?
Elfangor tells the visser to make his move. He believes that the Yeerk had planned to kill him from the start. Elfangor talks of a tail-blade fight in zero gravity! That would be beyond awesome! Be still my little fangirl heart.
But, no, the visser moves to activate the Time Matrix and Elfangor goes to activate it too. And, Elfangor, I think a lot of people that have done drugs can feel you now. If you're wondering, Elfangor's description seems to be of a trip, if ya know what I mean.
Elfangor's remarks about the Yeerk in Alloran's brain is horrifying. Beautiful and yet disgusting.
Holy fucking shit! Elfangor saw Alloran's decision to use the quantum virus! I...this is a kid's book! Holy shit!
Finally Elfangor comes back to the present and realizes he has to counter Visser Thirty-Two's moves. Elfangor tries to think of where he grew up on the Andalite home world, but those images are mixed in with pictures he's seen of Earth.
Loren takes control of the Time Matrix! Elfangor, again, commenting on her strength. And a being, probably the Ellimist, laughs at them all.
Chapter 36
Elfangor wakes up with the laughter still ringing in his ears. He looks around and it seems like he's on the Andalite home world. And he's where he grew up too!
Are therant trees supposed to be like Ents? As they can speak in a way (but not with words). And other trees can actually speak with words? Planet of the Ents?
There seems to be an awful lot of rituals in Andalite society. Elfangor does a ritual for forgiveness but laments that he's not ready to be forgiven. My baby!
Elfangor realizes he knows WHERE he is but not WHEN. And, by the age of the therant (it's also called the Garibah but that seems to be the name for a guide tree that I guess can be a therant) it could be long LONG before Elfangor had even been born.
Elfangor gets excited and heads for home as he realizes he doesn't care when he is, just that he's on his home world. He remarks that he wants to play with his old toys and be a child again. He used to dream of being a Prince, fighting the Yeerks, and winning the war. But he's now seen the war and decides he wants no part of it. That's character development you're looking at.
So Andalites can taste but it's not as great a sense as a human's sense of taste is.
Elfangor realizes he isn't on the Andalite home world as there's a waterfall that is odd as it's basically just there and not as a waterfall should be. Elfangor recognizes the waterfall as the one from the cigarette ad.
And now Elfangor realizes that Visser Thirty-Two, himself, and Loren have created their own reality. Elfangor guesses that the being he had heard (which I now think has a possibility of being Crayak) was laughing because it knew what was happening.

Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Chapters 20-27)
Chapter 20
Elfangor stops like I used to stop at stop lights (only reason I don't now is because I'm not supposed to drive) and is thrown across the deck. But Arbron doesn't waver as his many Taxxon legs keep him stable.
Arbron manages to shoot all three Bug Fighters down like more experienced Andalites would have trouble doing! Arbron says it's because that's what Taxxons are good at. Only problem I have with this is it seems the number of Bug Fighters chasing them has changed.
Elfangor and Arbron are both able to now really think about what it means that Arbron is a nothlit. When Elfangor turns the ship around and talks about getting Alloran, Loren, and Chapman back, Arbron panics. He brings up the Time Matrix but Elfangor tells him about the heat signature. Arbron doesn't care and attacks Elfangor. Arbron seems to do this in the hope that Elfangor will kill him and end his pain. Elfangor disarms him (literally) instead. I really want to talk about this scene more in depth, but there's no time for that now.
Arbron reveals both he and Alloran had eaten the Taxxon that had fallen. Poor Arborn, he has to be stuck with that hunger forever now.
Elfangor threatens to stun him and Arbron fools the aristh into putting the Dracon beam on full power. Luckily Elfangor doesn't hit Arbron, but ends up sending the ship crashing down. I'm just stuck wondering why Elfangor trusted Arbron. The trick shouldn't have worked because Elfangor knew Arbron wanted death and so whatever Arbron said about the Dracon beam shouldn't have been trusted. Knowing the trick had zero to do with knowing about the technology at hand.
Chapter 21
Elfangor wakes up from the crash and doesn't remember where he is. He remembers events but the thing he remembers best is Arbron tricking Elfangor into killing him.
Elfangor looks for Arbron and explores the wreckage. Some things seem to be off.
Elfangor finds the Time Matrix and is in awe at the sight of it. He remarks that it looks so unremarkable and you couldn't tell how powerful it was by merely looking at it.
Elfangor is still worried about Arbron but looks around the ship some more. He finds a photo album from Earth. He delights in the pictures. He thinks of being on Earth with Loren because his current situation is so horrible. He falls asleep looking a photographs and wakes up when there is daylight.
Elfangor realizes that Taxxons have taken Arbron and thinks it's more likely the Mountain Taxxons (aka the rebel Taxxons) took the nothlit.
Elfangor decides not to go after Arbron because he's probably dead anyways. He decides to go find Alloran. I really am pained now as Elfangor is in so much pain and now he has to go after the one who hates him instead of the one who he feels friendship for.
My fiance, revrezner, really likes Mustangs and now there is one in this book. Was this series predicting not just my fandom life but my real life to? Or is it just a weird coincidence?
Elfangor learning how to drive is amusing. Makes me feel better about my driving abilities and shows that Andalites aren't confused about primitive technology. I remember from the Animorphs tv show, the few episodes that I did watch, an episode where Ax doesn't realize how doors on cars worked. Either Elfangor is smarter than his brother, or the tv show was being disrespectful to the books.
Chapter 22
Elfangor is just reveling in the feeling of driving a convertible (I'm assuming that as Elfangor doesn't know that much about human technology at this point and so can't tell the reader) across the Taxxon home world. He does remark that all isn't right but he's still enjoying. This little bit of happiness pleases me so much.
Elfangor had collected some of the human objects from the Skrit Na ship. He's drinking Dr Pepper and I so wish he was drinking beer. Both are brown liquids. But, then again, this is a kids book.
Elfangor remarks that he is never going to morph into a Taxxon again even if it's a smart option. And who can blame him? He had horrible experiences in the morph and his friend is now a nothlit in that morph.
A hole opens in the ground and Elfangor and the Mustang go down it. Applegate chose to say "slid and rattled and rolled" when she could've used "shook and rattled and rolled".
Turns out Elfangor has fallen into a Taxxon cavern system thing. The mountain is alive and talks through thought-speak. Elfangor remarks that it sounds like a planet talking which makes me wonder how really awesome the Animorphs universe is if planets can speak.
Arbron turns out to be alive!
Arbron also turns out to be serving the Living Hive (aka the mountain creature). He says it's the mother and father of the Taxxons. Elfangor, understandably, thinks Arbron has gone nuts. Arbron replies that the Living Hive saved him and tells Elfangor about the vast tunnel system.
Arbron says that the Living Hive is angry and Elfangor just about shits his britches. Well, that would be true if he wore pants. Arbron reassures him by saying that the Living Hive is angry and mad at the Yeerks and is going to launch an attack. It couldn't do so before now but now it has Arbron. Elfangor asks about that part and Arbron seems sad when he remarks what better option does he have. Arbron has accepted that he is now a Taxxon.
Arbron's reasoning for it makes me want to break down in tears. He remarks that since he didn't successfully die he finds that he is glad for life. He remarks that there is always hope. As someone who thinks, sometimes on a daily basis, about killing herself this hits me so hard. Yes, Arbron is going on a suicide mission, but he isn't without hope now and his reason for going isn't to end his own life. Instead, he's doing it for a greater good.
Elfangor doesn't understand about Arbron accepting life as a Taxxon or thinking that Taxxons are good creatures, but he decides to help because they are opposing the Yeerks.
Chapter 23
Again Elfangor is left with only his thoughts (and this time no Loren). Arbron is busy being a general and he has changed emotionally. I believe it's because of his new found outlook on life and finding a worthy cause to fight for.
Arbron tells Elfangor the plan. He reminds Elfangor that getting the Time Matrix to safety is the most important thing. He says that rescuing the humans and finding Alloran is secondary. Elfangor offers to tell Arbron's parents about his fate. But Arbron insists to lie to his parents and say he died in battle. So I guess that Arbron is fine with his situation but it'd be embarrassing to his parents. Or he doesn't want his parents' pity. Arbron ends their talk by saying that the spaceport will be absolute chaos and Elfangor won't be able to tell which Taxxon is on what side. Arbron, therefore, gives Elfangor the okay to kill whichever Taxxons get in his way.
Elfangor blasting down the tunnels in the Mustang feels very different to him than driving the Mustang previously. Before it was fun and now he's more concerned about not hurting himself.
Elfangor arrives on the scene of the spaceport bloodbath by hitting a Taxxon and having it burst open (yes, blood does get on the Andalite). He remarks that he can hardly think with all Hell unleashed in one spot.
Elfangor spots the humans and Arbron. He asks the nothlit which side is which.
Arbron replies, [There's no difference anymore, Elfangor! Don't you see? Blood has been spilled. The hunger...the hunger! Stop me, Elfangor! Stop me!]
After he gives that heartbreaking bit of dialogue, he can't help himself and goes after the two humans.
Elfangor gives this description of it: And with that, Arbron, aristh of the Dome ship StarSword, lost his last shred of control.
Why the hell am I attracted to such heartbreaking series?
Chapter 24
Elfangor goes into panic/savior mode. Before he thought of the bloodbath, but now he's only concerned about Loren's safety. Elfangor is able to stop Arbron by reminding the nothlit that he's an aristh and has a duty.
Some Hork-Bajir Controllers approach Elfangor and Sub-Visser Seven is among them. The sub-visser remarks that he is glad that Elfangor escaped so he could use the Andalite as a host.
Arbron ends up standing beside Elfangor in this hopeless fight.
Elfangor makes a speech that would normally work in fiction, however it doesn't hear. The classic "In real life it doesn't work that way" line. That kind of line is both funny and problematic. Funny in that there's the whole "oh shit, this isn't going the way I planned" element. But it's also problematic as it's a line in a work of fiction.
Sub-Visser Seven sends his Hork-Bajir Controllers after the arisths and humans. Since only two Hork-Bajir Controllers can attack at a time Elfangor thinks he can deal with the situation. However, the fighting quickly escalates.
Suddenly Alloran appears in Hork-Bajir morph and threatens Sub-Visser Seven. Loren rushes over to check on Elfangor's wounds.
Again Alloran makes mention that he was involved in what happened on the Hork-Bajir home world.
Arbron demands to stay on the Taxxon home world and help with the Taxxon rebellion. This part is so heart breaking as Elfangor basically begs the nothlit to come with him. Elfangor didn't begin liking Arbron, but through all the pain and confusion he formed a friendship with the Andalite. Alloran ends the debate by calling Arbron a Warrior. To get Alloran's admiration and approval seems to be a VERY rare thing.
Chapter 25
The Jahar is able to leave the Taxxon home world without problems. Elfangor is relieved when he sees Alloran demorph. Alloran seems arrogant when he comments on the aristh thinking that he had become a nothlit like Arbron.
Chapman is "unusually quiet" but Elfangor doesn't pay attention to this as he hates Chapman and figures the human is just afraid of what will happen to him.
Alloran starts talking how now Elfangor wants orders when he disobeyed flushing the Yeerks into space. Alloran then talks about doing the job and finishing it this time. Elfangor reminds him that the Time Matrix is their first priority. Alloran replies that he's spent all his time on the Taxxon home world watching the ship that held the Yeerks. Alloran turns to Elfangor and the aristh can see that the war-prince is mad. Alloran says the most important thing in war is to destroy the enemy.
Alloran may have gone mad, but the point of war is to win. However, how far you should go to win is a whole 'nother discussion.
Alloran says to throw the Sub-Visser into space. Elfangor makes mention of how it seems Chapman and the Yeerk seem to talk to each other through glances and signals. He then thinks he must be imagining things. The Hork-Bajir that the sub-visser is in seems to relax. That seems to be a huge warning signal to me. Elfangor obeys Alloran's orders but doesn't look as he does the deed. He isn't relieved when the ordeal is over because he knows that they still have to destroy the Yeerk transport ship.
Alloran is cheerful as he'll finally get to destroy the ship he's watched for the past few days and be able to also get the Time Matrix. Elfangor is too tired to argue after everything that has happened.
Elfangor asks why Chapman agreed to come with them. They get into a short discussion where Chapman tries to defend his actions.
Alloran aims the shredder but orders Elfangor to take the shot as it'll erase the aristh's act of cowardice.
Chapter 26
Elfangor makes his choice and decides not to shoot. Alloran berates the aristh as he believes that war should be won at any costs. And says that Elfangor is one of those people that doesn't mind if immoral things are done in war as long as other people do it. Elfangor brings up the point that the Yeerks are helpless. Alloran counters by saying that the Yeerks are the enemy and that Elfangor is a hypocrite. He goes on to say it was wrong for him to be disgraced and to be sent on missions with arisths.
Alloran continues by saying that it doesn't matter how you kill an enemy and brings up that he had used a quantum virus on the Hork-Bajir home world. A quantum virus is something that breaks down something on a subatomic level and a species affected will be in agony as it slowly dies. This type of virus is highly illegal and the high ups in Andalite hierarchy had denied it. The common Andalite had been told that the Yeerks had lied about the Andalites using a quantum virus. So this is a real big shock to Elfangor to say the least. So we finally find out why Alloran is disgraced!
At this moment Chapman goes to attack Alloran. Now Elfangor can attack Chapman as obviously the human is now controlled by the sub-visser now! But, nope, the aristh knocks the mad war-prince out. Chapman is very happy about this and Elfangor still doesn't get it. What the bloody fuck? Elfangor, honey, I love you but sometimes you are really dense.
Elfangor is shocked about knocking Alloran out and decides to pick up the Time Matrix and then leave the Taxxon home world for good.
Elfangor makes a joke and Loren remarks that's a first for him. He then talks about Arbron. I need to give both of these heroes a hug! Loren asks about him driving a Mustang and Elfangor remarks that it was primitive but fun to drive.
Elfangor goes to get the Time Matrix and while he's getting it he realizes that he's been a dumb ass. He FINALLY realizes how much luck was required for their mission to succeed. And that it was TOO MUCH luck to happen by chance.
Loren had been a controller! I forgot about that particular reveal. Chapman being a controller I had guessed but...maybe I hadn't wanted to imagine her having a Yeerk in her head. But, yeah, she being a controller makes a shit load of sense and it would've been odd if she hadn't been one.
And now Alloran has Sub-Visser Seven controlling him. Shit!
Chapter 27
Was thinking of ending this post on Chapter 26 as I'm staying up later than I should to do this but I just have to read this tonight or I'd die in anticipation...or any period cramps that decide to say hi tonight (and I had some that lasted for five or ten minutes last morning).
Elfangor had to remind himself that Alloran is now really Sub-Visser Seven. The sub-visser reveals that another Yeerk had been in the Hork-Bajir host, he had really been in Chapman all along, and another Yeerk had been in Loren. The sub-visser compliments Elfangor on knocking Alloran out. Elfangor is in utter shock and horror that it was him that allowed the sub-visser to take an Andalite body.
The sub-visser says that it was lucky that the Mountain Taxxons had attacked when they did because the Andalites hadn't been very suspicious. Sub-Visser Seven also remarks that if Elfangor had decided to shoot the transport ship then he and the Yeerk in Loren would have been forced to reveal themselves. The Yeerk remarks that it's one thing to sacrifice one Yeerk life for the mission, but another to risk ten thousand Yeerk lives. So Yeerks do have some form of morality.
Elfangor threatens to kill the sub-visser, but the Yeerk mocks Elfangor's morality. Sub-Visser Seven even brings up the fact that the young Andalite won't kill a helpless foe. Can I just ask why mock this as it's what allowed Sub-Visser Seven's mission to succeed? But, then again, Yeerks hate Andalites beyond reason so that's probably the reason why.
Elfangor doesn't kill the sub-visser but stuns him. He drags Loren's body into the Jahar and reluctantly drags Chapman too. Before he can drag the sub-visser in there are Bug fighters. Elfangor hopes to fool the Yeerks by assuming the fact they can't tell one Andalite from another. He pretends to be Sub-Visser Seven and leaves the sub-visser to die. I am loving seeing Elfangor pretending to be a sub-visser!
While I enjoy this scene I must say that it shows that Elfangor has it in him to be cruel. Maybe not Sub-Visser Seven or Alloran cruel, but cruel nonetheless.
Sub-Visser Seven realizes instantly what Elfangor had done and immediately starts to run away.
Elfangor's bluff lasts long enough for him to escape into Zero-space.

Animorphs Re-Read: The Andalite Chronicles (Chapters 13-19)
Chapter 13
Elfangor talks about morphing training. How every Andalite is first given the djabala to turn into and, if the Andalite passes that test, then a kafit (a type of bird). Elfangor says that he had fun morphing into a kafit but how horrible morphing into a Taxxon is going to be. This reminds me of when one of the Animorphs (probably Marco) comments on the fact that they used to morph pleasant creatures.
Elfangor decides to morph into a Taxxon because he wants to show Alloran that he's a "good soldier" and that he's brave. Again with the pride. He could've said that he was morphing because the mission required it, but instead he said it was to please Alloran. I don't remember Elfangor being this prideful, or maybe it just means more to me now.
And the first morphing sequence of the book!
Elfangor comments on the loss of his vision and this surprises me. I thought that he would spend more time talking about how he doesn't have a tail-blade anymore, as an Andalite's tail-blade is his/her life. But the talk about sight is more important, story wise, as it allows an easy transition to comment on the Taxxon's compound eyes.
Holy fucking shit! Elfangor is commenting about Taxxon hunger and it's creepy. Creeps me out badly as an adult. Yeah, kids, read this and sleep well!

(got picture from HERE)
The only reason Elfangor doesn't attack Alloran and Arbron is because the Taxxon instincts know that they are more likely to win the fight. Whenever you morph into something, the creature's instincts can be overpowering. This is the reason why the Animorphs decided on the fact that they always had to test out a morph before a battle. Because if the morph was like a Taxxon, whose instincts are overpowering, they had to learn how to control it.
Elfangor warns Alloran and Arbron to be VERY careful when they morph.
[What, are you afraid I'm gonna morph and try to eat you?] Arbron asks jokingly.
[Yes, Arbron. I am afraid.] Elfangor replies because he knows that the reason he was able to control himself won't work when Arbron morphs.
Chapter 14
Taxxon hunger is really the defining characteristic of the species. So it makes sense that Elfangor begins the chapter by commenting on it. Adding that it never goes away.
It's terrifying that Elfangor doesn't know if he could've resisted eating Loren if she was there. The Elfangor x Loren feels are overpowering in that one sentence!
Elfangor comments on the fact that if they escape in the Yeerk ship that Alloran will order the Yeerks to be slaughtered. As the Yeerks can't immediately gets hosts, they'll have to wait a day, this is a real possibility. I like that this issue of morality is being dealt with. Honestly, I agree with Alloran here but I like seeing the hero choosing the moral choice while knowing its faults.
Well, they can spot the Skrit Na ship easily enough. Now if getting to it is just as simple.
And Alloran reminds Arbron and Elfangor what they are supposed to be. Cannibalistic Space Worms!
I guess "tall trees" is a form of measurement. I can't tell measurements when you say something like "ten feet". But "tall trees" is just lazy.
Ah...so the Gedds was the first race enslaved by the Yeerks. They're humanoid but are always hunched over so that there's always a limb to help them walk. Humans are still the only species to walk on two legs.
Elfangor is not liking the scenery at all. He comments on the fact that the average Andalite is being lied to about how well the war is going. He's used to being told that the Andalites are winning hands down when that is not the case.
And, oh God, I thought that since I was older this scene would be less terrifying. It isn't. Basically a Taxxon falls off of a train and Elfangor runs to eat it. After eating some of it, the Andalite backs away and is frightened of what he just did. Yeah, nightmare fuel.
A Hork-Bajir Controller (Yeerk's title is Sub-Visser Seven) notices Elfangor and says that he's interested in any Taxxon that will not eat fresh meat.
Chapter 15
Elfangor comments that Andalite Morphing technology (he uses the term "Morphing power") is wonderful and allows Andalites to be the "greatest spies in the galaxy". However, if you stay in a morph for over two hours you become stuck in the morph (aka become a nothlit like Tobias). This is what worries Elfangor as the sub-visser takes him on the mag-lev train car.
A sub-visser is a high rank in the Yeerk Empire. At the top is the Council of Thirteen (one member of the Council is emperor but it's never revealed in the Animorphs series who it is, yeah I looked), then the Vissers, and finally the sub-vissers. The lower number of the rank (aka two is lower than three), the higher the position is.
The sub-visser seems to realize that Elfangor is an Andalite in morph. The Andalite aristh decides to speak in gibberish to fool the Yeerk. What is interesting here is that the translator can detect what language another is speaking. That is highly useful. But the translator is able to work even in morph, so where is it located? And how does it work?
The sub-visser asks for Elfangor to speak in Galard (the language that's basically like common in Star Wars) and the Andalite doesn't as he fears a trap.
The Yeerk also brings up that there's a rebel force of Taxxons (called Mountain Taxxons). Elfangor files this info under 'news my superiors need to hear ASAP'.
Elfangor hopes that Alloran and Arbron will complete the mission as he doesn't think he'll be able to.
Sub-Visser Seven says that any rebel Taxxon is fed to loyal Taxxons. He says "idiotic regulations" but it's clear that he's trying to prod Elfangor into telling him the truth. The sub-visser gives Elfangor the choice of a painless death if he confesses to being an Andalite. The young Andalite mourns over the fact that all his dreams of becoming a great warrior had just been dashed. I admit I like seeing this happen as his pride has been thoroughly dashed by reality in this scene.
Sub-Visser Seven says that Elfangor doesn't have to die if the Andalite will become his host. I'm getting the feeling I've just been introduced to Visser Three.
Sub-Visser Seven comments on the fact that no Andalite has been taken alive because they commit suicide via tail-blade. Those Andalites are bad ass! It's one thing to fight in a battle and another thing to decide your cause is more important than your life.
When the Yeerk is done explaining, Elfangor feels revulsion and tells the Yeerk to remember his name. Also stating that he'll never be taken alive. Yep, it's safe to say we've met Visser Three.
Chapter 16
Elfangor is falling and is demorphing as he wants to die an Andalite and not a "disgusting, cannibalistic worm". He doesn't demorph before he hits the ground and Taxxons start eating him. How could I forget how really disturbing these books were?
Luckily Elfangor's tail-blade forms in time to save him out from being eaten alive. Elfangor manages to injure some Taxxons and so the other Taxxons figure the Andalite is worth too much risk to eat. The Yeerks fire at him and he hides in the crowd of Taxxons.
I guess the Hork-Bajir Controllers aren't translated all in English to show that they're speaking a combination of languages?
Elfangor decides to morph into a kafit so he can escape. It's brought up that once you acquire a morph it's yours forever. He's so scared he couldn't tell if he had morphed which is really REALLY weird. Of course he has morphed and he flies away.
Elfangor sees that the Jahar has been captured. All I can think is: GODDAMMIT, CHAPMAN, WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO THIS TIME?
It was Chapman's fault, goddammit! He has Loren tied up and is offering to trade humanity for I don't want to know. Power? Whatever the bloody fuck he thinks he can get? Arg!
Chapter 17
So Andalites have more than one heart? Looking on Seerowpedia it turns out they have three hearts.
The beginning of this chapter is mostly recap as, at this point in the book, it has come to Part 2. If you're wondering, there is more of Elfangor talking about his bromance with the Jahar.
Elfangor worries about Arbron (his "fellow aristh") and Alloran. He talks about how Alloran should be dealing with his situation as the war-prince has experience.
Elfangor then accepts the fact that the fate of his entire race rests on him (remember, the Time Matrix can make it so the Yeerks can stop the Andalite race from existing). It's adorable that he has to remind himself that rescuing Loren can't be his first priority now.
However, Elfangor does tell her not to talk about the Time Matrix and promises to save her. Though he knows that she has no reason to believe him.
Doesn't Elfangor think of the possibility of a Yeerk being put into Chapman and so the Time Matrix will be revealed?
Elfangor demorphs in sewage but doesn't mind since he's back in his own body. However, that happiness is short lived as he has to resume his Taxxon morph. Arbron comes while Elfangor is mid-morph and Elfangor is relieved just to see another Andalite. Elfangor notices Arbron acting oddly but just writes it off.
Chapter 18
Elfangor's basic plan amounts to him and Arbron just strolling into the Skrit Na ship and flying away. Again Elfangor's pride is mentioned as he talks about appearing like a fighter pilot. Not to belittle a characteristic of our lead, but I could invent a drinking game about this book and Elfangor's pride would be part of it.
Again the Taxxon hunger is mentioned. It is still creepy as ever. And this is a book for children!
There is a suspicious Gedd Controller. Elfangor attempts to speak Galard with his Taxxon tongue but the Gedd Controller asks for him to use a pad attached to his wrist (it's a translator). Arbron, being the technical genius of the two, uses it.
Oh, god, Elfangor said [So far so good] which I remember being the phrase in the Animorphs series that indicated shit was about to go down.
Elfangor demorphs as quickly as he can. It is after he demorphs that Arbron reveals he is a nothlit and not able to morph out of being a Taxxon. I knew this was coming but it still hurts like I'm reading it for the first time.
[I really wish I could, Elfangor.] Arbron says and my heart breaks again!
Chapter 19
Elfangor knows that there is no time to talk about Arbron being a nothlit, but he allows himself to feel horror at the knowledge. The reason that the Taxxon morph was painted as being so horrible now reveals itself. It's so that the reader feels utter horror, disgust, and despair at what has happened to Arbron.
Elfangor remarks that the Skrit Na ship is moving too slow. Arbron suggests using the Time Matrix, but the prideful Andalite remarks that they don't know how the weapon works. If it takes too long to start working then they'll be dead. Elfangor also remarks about how their superiors will react to them using the Time Matrix and Arbron laughs at that. Then Arbron realizes Elfangor is talking about the "mythical" Ellimists. Elfangor points out if the Time Matrix is real why not the Ellimists.
I loved the Ellimists when the species was first introduced but I wasn't happy what they turned into (basically one character, but that's a rant for another day).
A Bug Fighter is coming after our two Andalite cadets! Elfangor is shaken but decides to try to outrace the Bug Fighter and its buddy in the atmosphere. Arbron replies with the obligatory WTF.
Elfangor dives down and the two are both scared and excited. Elfangor basically commenting that the experience is amazing.
As the chase continues Arbron holds back a piece of information concerning the ship saying, [...you don't even want to know.]
A Bug Fighter explodes but Arbron tells Elfangor he can't pull the same move off in time (the Bug Fighter couldn't handle the atmosphere). The nothlit offers to shoot the remaining two Bug Fighters but Elfangor questions if he can with Taxxon abilities. Arbron is, of course, insulted and insists he can. Elfangor wants to leave the decision making to the captain, but the captain is him. He decides to let Arbron make the shot.
