The Giver and Color

And today I found out that this is the first book in a series. Now I have more books on my to-read list.
UPDATE: The Giver will be shot in both color and black and white according to this article.

Now I know making a movie adaptation of a book is a hard thing to do. Hell, I would never want to be in charge of one. People would want it to be true to the book and others wouldn't mind the adaptation changing things. And people will hate you for the adaptation no matter what.

But one thing you can't change in a movie adaptation is the heart and soul of the book/source material. So making a story modern day (Elementary and Hannibal) is okay but if you change important parts of the source material (DOOM and Nickelodeon's Animorphs tv show) then not so good.

Movie adaptations sometimes feel as if they were written by people who had no clue about what made the books so enjoyable. So when I see a trailer I try to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and other times the trailer makes me so mad I just rage while thinking about it.
The Giver's trailer is in color. Now I haven't read the book since fifth or sixth grade so I don't remember what happens all that well and I'm using Wikipedia as a basic guide to what happened. But the thing I remember is that the book is in black and white. This is part of the symbolism of the book.

The Giver is a dystopian novel. I am a big fan of this sub-genre since it tends to show what people value at any given time. They are fears of a given time kept for all eternity in story form.

The Giver's big thing is sameness. That everything is the same to keep the peace and even color has been taken out of people's lives. This isn't the first time that pain being removed to keep the peace has been done in a Young Adult novel (and, yes, I'm focusing on Young Adult novels written before and during The Giver's release, at least when I read The Giver).

So the movie getting the color wrong makes me doubt if it can get anything right. The color in the trailer is so distracting for me that I can't remember what was shown in the trailer. If I ever do an insightful look at a The Giver trailer I will have to watch it a few more times to review it.

The Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris)

Title: The Silence of the Lambs

Series: Hannibal

Author: Thomas Harris

Released: 1988

Rating: 5/6

Basic Plot: A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname--Buffalo Bill--is stalking women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, chief of the Bureau's Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter--Hannibal the Cannibal--who is kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Dr. Lecter is a former psychiatrist with a grisly history, unusual tastes, and an intense curiosity about the darker corners of the mind. His intimate understanding of the killer and of Clarice herself form the core of Thomas Harris' The Silence of the Lambs--and ingenious, masterfully written book and an unforgettable classic of suspense fiction.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Will Graham's Life
At the end of Red Dragon you're left wondering if Molly is going to leave Will or not. That and Will's drug trip. In this book don't expect answers to his love life. But that's not to say you don't get any answers about how he's doing. You find out he's a drunk in Florida with a messed up face. Oh the joy!

Clarice and Hannibal
I had prepared myself to start to ship these two and now I can't wait to read Hannibal to watch it evolve. Upon seeing the movie I could see how people could want these two together. For every time Hannibal teases Clarice, he tries to help her. It's complicated in this book, mainly because Hannibal being in a normal relationship isn't going to happen anytime soon. I mean...Hannibal isn't the guy to do dinner and the movies. Well, without the dinner being people.

Hannibal the Cannibal
I was first brought into the folds of the Hannibal fandom through the NBC show Hannibal. So there are many a joke made about almost no one realizing Hannibal is the one they're after. So when the line 'Hannibal the Cannibal' came up I was just wondering why no one has put the two together. I know that it's because the FBI doesn't work that way but...I can think whatever I want no matter how illogical!

Final Thoughts
So far, this is my favorite of the Hannibal books. Maybe it's because of the fact that Hannibal really gets his big chance to shine. You get Clarice Starling who, not only dealing with struggling to become an actual FBI agent, deals with sexism time and again. Instead of losing her cool, she stands up to it. She is great, never mind the other characters. And poor Bella!

Steamwork Popoko and Tigrean To Enjoy

Two new and cool Steamwork pets! Nice way to close out the Masquerade this year.

The Steamwork Popoko looks very confused. But in a comforting old professor sort of way. It's like he'd be working on a brand new invention and not remember what day it was. The eyes are the most adorable part of this pet.

The Steamwork Tigrean is one of the most beautiful pets to come out in a little bit. This pet looks like a bad ass. Like it will tear you apart for thinking it's a simple pet. This is a pet that I would use to take over the world.

If I was going to take over the world...

Why The Love Story in Divergent is Unique Today

Nowadays movies/books/tv shows/ect. are full of love triangles. What makes this annoying to me, as someone who writes love triangles from time to time, is that a lot of these love triangles are put in places that they don't belong. At all.

Even though I don't like Twilight, the books are fun but not good, the fact is that the love triangle belongs in that story. That genre and plot sort of demand it. While the quality isn't good, fact is that it doesn't look out of place (except that everyone always knew she'd choose Edward so there wasn't any tension).

While in The Hobbit movie trilogy, the love triangle seems very forced. There's a female character created just for the trilogy and now she has to choose between two men. I wouldn't mind it if there was a romance between her and another character, but having a love triangle in that trilogy just doesn't make sense at all.
This makes the love story in the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth so unique in today's age of putting a love triangle everywhere.

Beatrice "Tris" Prior and Tobias "Four" Eaton manage to tell a compelling love story without the need of a third person.

Tris' culture shock and being open to a new world with new possibilities makes her relationship with Four stand on its own. Four is able to give Tris room when she needs it and doesn't push. A very good quality in a boyfriend. If your bf/gf is making you uneasy and pushing you to do things you don't want to...might want to look for a new one.

Another part of their relationship that provides drama is Four's trust issues with Tris. A few times in the trilogy chaos is caused by Four not trusting Tris. I remember a part in Allegiant (the final book in the trilogy) where Tris calls him out on that.

So look, writers, Hollywood directors, and all the others putting content out: look at the Tris/Four love story. See that love triangles aren't always needed and a compelling love story can be told without one.

Not saying that all love triangles are bad, but there are some in places that don't need one.

Really Tough Season
This season brought one moment and one episode that made me feel horror more than I have in any previous season of this show. One character death effected me on the same level as Dale's passing, but was much more powerful. I had to get my inhaler out and it took me awhile to calm down. And in the next episode revrezner, who is good about not giving me spoilers, was worried that I'd have another crying spell when the zombified head is shown. One episode dealt with a rather serious topic, without spoiling anything I'll say mental illness in the zombie apocalypse, and it ended like it should. Not saying it's a really happy ending, but necessary and realistic all the same.

Odd Second Half
Now I think some people might complain about the second half of the season. Why? All the character development instead of plot development. Plus you don't always see every character in every episode. Sometimes Rick is in an episode and sometimes he isn't. I, myself, didn't mind this at all. I liked seeing the characters in this way. I started to ship Beth/Daryl more than I used to. We saw great improvement from Glenn in his story arch. All in all, it was something I didn't mind at all. Just a little odd in the beginning.

Michonne is Humanized
When we first met Michonne at the start of Season 3 (not counting the finale of Season 2 since it was just a brief appearance and you didn't learn anything about her) she is very stoic. Almost mechanical you could say. In this season you see her become part of the group and she even smiles. Let me tell you that one of the creepiest things this season is Michonne smiling. I mean...that's not normal! But you eventually get used to it and it isn't a jarring.

Final Thoughts
This was a good season and I don't get people being negative about it. I can understand the second half being rough on people, but there was so much that was great about it. We get a return of the Governor and see him humanized. We see how Rick is adapting to the world and becoming a farmer. We see what happens when you get too complacent. Plus the episode "The Grove" is, hands down, one of the best episodes of the entire series.

New Steamwork Velosotor and Warador Has Been Revamped

As the Masquerade nears its end these two Steamwork pets should make the pain go away a little easier. I am somewhat disappointed that there wasn't a plot this year. But, hey, at least there was some fun to it. Plus new Steamwork pets for those looking for the perfect pet and color.

The Steamwork Velosotor is a nice mechanical dinosaur for you to live with. A great creature to defend you and maybe play cards with.

The Steamwork Warador has been revamped and still has a deadly air to it. I wouldn't suggest treating it lightly at all. It seems to have a worn down look.

Tobias and Me 4

Talking to Cat was nice. I didn't yet know how or if I would get back home to Earth. I could only hope and talking to the woman was reassuring. When she couldn't hear me that well I would resort to thought speak to get a point across.

She showed interest in the topic of Yeerks. Or maybe it was the fact that we didn't have to discuss our feelings for the other that made the topic so interesting to her. We could each pretend that when we got to Earth we wouldn't speak again. But we might meet up once or twice after that and then go our separate ways. Who knew? We had to get to Earth first.

I had told her I planned to take her home though I didn't know how. That didn't seem to surprise her.

Hork-Bajirs can hear very well. So it was with Hork-Bajir hearing that I heard the Skrit Na converse between themselves. I stood up and Cat tensed as if to prepare herself to fight. It wasn't the movements of a seasoned warrior, but it was the movements of someone scared that was getting prepared to react to something they had no clue how to.

"Hang on." I told her and went over to the Skrit Na.

What's going on? I asked them as the last Skrit Na went into their ship. We had a deal!

I knew they wouldn't keep the deal if they thought they'd die by helping me. Useless cowards! They were so scared that they had left some of their cargo. That must mean...

"What is it?" Cat asked and I would've jumped if I hadn't heard her approach me.

"Yeerks." I replied with loathing in my voice.

I didn't know if I was more angry at the Skrit Na abandoning me or the Yeerks as a whole. I knew that all Yeerks weren't evil, Aftran being one of the good ones, and so I hoped I wasn't hating Yeerks as a whole.

"Let's go to my ship." I said and I didn't have to grab Cat's arm for her to start moving.

"Are you sure?" She asked, fear permeating her question.

"The Skrit Na wouldn't abandon you if it wasn't a big danger. Yeerks are the baddest thing in the galaxy."

I didn't bring up the Ellimist or Crayak. Those two beings were more powerful than the Yeerks by a long shot, but I didn't know how much the Skrit Na knew about those two. Besides, if those two wanted to attack anyone there wouldn't be much of a fight. There wouldn't be enough time to even begin to explain them to Cat.

As those thoughts went through my head I could see some Bug fighters coming in the distance as the Skrit Na went away.

"Bug fighters!" I shouted to Cat and we started to run towards my Bug fighter.

I made sure to stay equal to her speed and not go too far away from her. If there was one thing I didn't want to happen, it was to let her die on an alien planet.

As we got close to my Bug fighter the enemy Bug fighters started firing around the area. They must have tracked it somehow. Who knew how, maybe a tracker they put on all their ships. I'd ask Ax when I got back. If I got back.

By pure instict I covered Cat with my body, though that wouldn't do anything if they started firing at us. It's not like Hork-Bajir skin is strong enough to stand laser based weapons. But it was the only thing I could think to do at the moment.

I looked at my fighter and watched as it exploded. The movies prepare you only for a little bit of how big explosions are when you're close to one. The heat of the explosion seemed beyond huge and little bits flew towards Cat and myself. I managed to only get a few minor cuts and Cat only had a cut on her arm.

Cat screamed in pain and I turned to our only way home now destroyed. The Yeerks must have wanted to make me feel helpless as they could've just erased it from existence. At least that's how it would appear as.

"Run." I hissed and shook my head before Cat could ask. "No time to think, just run."

As we raced across the alien landscape, the enemy Bug fighters shooting at random around us, I was scared. Especially for Cat. At least I had the ability to morph but she was just human. Being human wasn't bad in normal circumstances, but this wasn't a normal circumstance. This was way beyond normal.

I'd have to give her the morphing ability. And if she was captured? No, she wouldn't be captured. I'd make sure of it.

We ran for a long time, or at least it appeared like a long time to me, before hearing a sound. I turned my head slightly and saw some of the natives. They looked like cats in the sense of Ewoks looking like little bears. Each looked deadly but adorable in the same instant.

I was about to ask them what they were and if they were friendly. But, before I could, it appeared very clear that they were trying to direct us.

"Friends?" Cat managed to ask.

"Hopefully." I replied and we began to follow the creatures.

We eventually ended up going into an entrance located at the bottom of a tree. My Hork-Bajir stomach growled as it looked at the bark. I had to resist and followed the small entrance, with Cat behind me, into what eventually ended up being a small little neighborhood of these creatures.

As Cat and I looked around I realized that now I didn't have a way to check how much time I had been in morph. Nor did I have an internal clock like Andalites did.

I didn't know if any of these creatures were Controllers or if they would ultimately sell me out to the Yeerks. But I had no choice. I didn't want to become a nothlit.

So, pushing back any fear I had to the deepest part of my mind, I demorphed. My blades turned into feathers first and I shrank before any other features of my red-tailed hawk morph took form.

When I finished morphing I looked at Cat.

Hi. I said to her look of astonishment.
