Wonder Woman 1984 (Mini-Review)

Wonder Woman 1984 was released in 2020 and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Kristen Wiig. It was directed by Patty Jenkins. The story follows a stone that grants one wish to all that hold it. It is up to Diana to stop the stone in order to keep all human civilizations from ending. But in order to save humanity, she must make a sacrifice of her own.

The first Wonder Woman movie set in the DC Expanded Universe (DCEU) was a big hit. This was probably due to the lackluster quality of the previous movies. So it didn't have many high standards to meet. The sequel, however, had the standards set by the previous film.

While the first Wonder Woman movie dealt with Diana having to face what the world really was like, the sequel is the standard 'be careful what you wish for' story. Such stories have been done before countless times so when going into the film I wasn't looking for originality. I was just looking for an interesting story with a good message.

The message ended up being that achieving your goals in a quick and easy manner can have deadly consequences. Diana, Barbara Minerva, and Maxwell Lord all experience terrible consequences when they make their wishes. Each of their stories shows different ways of how getting things in a quick manner can be both tempting and deadly at the same time.

Steve Trevor getting brought to 1984 provides some extremely amusing moments in the film. He is now like how Diana was in the first movie. While he's not stupid, some of the things in 1984 confuse him. The most amusing moment is when he looks at a trash can like it's a piece of art because Diana told him everything is art. Oh, and his fanny pack makes him look very relatable.

While the movie is a work of art, there are a few things that bring the film down just a little. Such as not finding out the final fate of the Dreamstone. We know that its deadly power is contained, but we never see what happens to it after the final fight. I was hoping that a mid or post credit scene would explain things a little more. Now I loved the mid-credits scene, but I was disappointed we didn't find out the stone's final fate.

Diana and Steve going through the fireworks was a spectacular looking scene and I would've loved to see that part in theaters. I watched the movie on HBO Max as I have not gone to theaters since the pandemic started. While a breathtaking scene on its own, it was confusing about why it was happening. Or maybe I just really wanted the couple to get to their next destination badly.

I would recommend Wonder Woman 1984 to all those that loved the first movie, those invested in the DCEU, and those who like a good 'be careful of what you wish for' movie.
