JASH
I ripped out the throat of a werebear and howled at the night sky over Argonia. With my senses alert to the battle around Hircine and myself, I could tell that this was a kill that would be safe to relish.
So instead of going after another target, I relished in tearing out each of the werebear’s organs and swallowing them whole. If not for the excitement I would have noticed sooner that my world was again shifting around me.
I stopped tearing my prey apart when I began to cough. Bits of the werebear fell from my maw and I felt something else exit me…Scratch! My egg-friends had done it! They had managed to free me from my chains!
Faster than even a Daedric Prince could understand, I was coughing in the Writer’s Room. Not only was my mind once more my own, I was back in my Saxhleel form. The body that so closely resembled the one that had hatched from an egg so many lifetimes ago.
When I could once again comprehend the world around me, more than merely understanding where I was, my eyes went first to Alex. He was crouched beside me and the stoic expression that graced his face so often had been replaced by one full of concern.
My eyes then went to Hircine who now appeared as a slightly taller than normal human. His human features were also mixed with the form of a deer. The dryskins of Earth would probably identify him as a sickly ‘wendigo’ if they saw him now.
What if-I turned quickly to look at Alan Wake. The bullet hole had already closed as if it had never been there and he was sitting warily behind his desk. Good. Good. This was the final loop and the end of his enslavement to the Dark Presence.
Alex, Hircine, and I turned as one to see Saga crying happily with a cell phone pressed tightly to her ear. I didn’t have to use my Daedric Prince hearing to know Logan was on the other end and in no danger. She was finally free of this ballad.
“We must leave.” Hircine said once Saga ended her call with Logan. “Now.”
“No.” Alex replied. “I have to say something. Jash told me the…the last me was able to say his goodbyes.”
“And look where that got him.”
“The other Alex died because we didn’t yet understand the need to balance.” I snapped. “It had nothing to do with taking a mere moment of eternity to say his farewells. He is leaving everything he has ever known for us, my love. He deserves more time to leave his old life behind him.”
Hircine looked at me and I saw the battle inside. He wanted to make me happy but he also yearned to return to Nirn as soon as possible.
“It was hard to track you, husband.” Hircine said quietly. “If we take too long then this will be our home. I heard each prayer you whispered and know that the air of this world is not to your liking. Your hunting grounds lies elsewhere.”
“If Alex stays here for too long I can still make sure you arrive where you came from.” Alan said and then tensed slightly when the Daedric Prince of the Hunt looked at him.
Hircine then looked at me and Alex. Did he see the hurt in the dryskin’s eyes? Did he feel the same intense love I had for the dryskin? Did he experience those things too differently for that to matter now?
“As a wedding gift to you, husband, I will allow you time to say your farewells.” Hircine said and crossed his arms.
“Thanks.” Alex replied gruffly.
