ALEX CASEY

I had hated watching Saga go into a dangerous situation without being able to warn her. She had done so much for me as a friend and had even been willing to help me truly feel once again. I shouldn’t have stood back and let her take such a risk.

The fight between her and Scratch had been horrifying to hear. I had wanted to run to her side but Jash had gripped my arm too tight for me to get to her. Every moment had felt like dying.

I spared a look at Jash. My husband outwardly looked calm as if nothing could bother him. But I knew him too well and saw the crack in his façade. Such as his eyes observed everything at a distance but he blinked slightly too fast. He stood still but his crest was pressed a little too close to his head.

Jash had had the plan to lie to Saga. He had been the one to have a convincing argument as to why Saga had to be kept in the dark.

And I had agreed to it.

He was still the only man I had ever loved, I was still uncertain about Hircine, and I could never stop. Even if I didn’t like what he had done, I couldn’t stop these feelings running through my head.

I would still lie about the Clicker and hope that this nightmare ended tonight so we never had to lie to her again.

As a very angry looking Saga stormed into the sheriff’s office, I let out a sigh of relief. Jash and Kiran were safe and now so was she. She could look as pissed off as she wanted as we deserved her anger.

Saga was a very calm and collected woman. She had to be as she balanced being a mother, wife, and agent. But now she said words and phrases I had never heard pass her lips before. She was beyond pissed off and I deserved the tongue lashing I got as did Jash.

Kiran, though, remained out of Saga’s scope. The FBC agent hadn’t hurt Saga like we had. Saga had known both of us as friends and people she could turn to when needed. So to have it turn out the ones she trusted lied and put her in danger was beyond maddening.

“I’m used to ********.” Saga said as she finished her tirade. “But you two have never done **** like this to me before.”

“It is ours to be people and characters in a ballad.” Jash said in Jel.

“Jel.” I said under my breath as Saga looked to me. “She doesn’t understand it.”

“Sorry, egg-friend. What I meant to say in English is that we are both people with thoughts and feelings as well as characters in a story. And it is the part of us that are characters in a story that affects how truthful I can be.”

Saga’s look became more calm and closer to the woman I had known for years.

“I wish things were different, Saga, my heart truly breaks for the lies I had to tell.” Jash said and slammed a hand against his chest. “But too large of a heart would have torn this reality into two.”

“And you?” Saga asked and focused solely on me.

“My husband promised you would be safe.” I answered.

“Even before we arrived at Cauldron Lake, Alex has been worried about your safety. He asked me time and time again if I was certain you weren’t in any real danger.” Jash corroborated. “By Sithis, it became annoying once we arrived in Bright Falls.”

Saga considered what we had said. Her body posture was now more relaxed than when she had first stormed in. While she wasn’t happy, the trust between us was there again. I hadn’t just lost a friend.

“You can tell me everything.” Saga said with a slight sarcastic tone that both annoyed and amused me at the same time. “If you want to make up nearly having me killed, that is.”

The Clicker. If we told her everything then we were all ******. I focused on doing the mental tricks Jash had taught me to make sure Saga didn’t get too clear of an idea of what I was thinking or feeling.

“Why are you scared?” Saga asked with no hint of anger in her voice.

“You’re going to come up with a plan to capture Scratch.” I answered to avoid telling her the truth. “It’s not going to work.”

I felt rather than saw Kiran’s look. She knew there was something more. If Saga read that merely as the FBC agent not trusting us, that would be for the best.

“It is ours to be possessed by Scratch once more.” Jash said and I didn’t have to fake the shiver that went down my spine. “It is for Alex to try and ignore that truth. Failing that, it is his to feel intense fear.”

“We can always change the plan.” Kiran said, breaking her silence.

“When one deals with the very fabric of reality, it is not wise to go too far into uncharted territory. So if we want this nightmare to end, Saga must continue on with her plan as if nothing has changed. I will not sacrifice discomfort for failure.”

Saga looked at Jash with pity in her eyes. All that anger had gone away and now she could once again look at my husband with a sense of caring.

“It sounds like you just want to be punished, Jash.” Saga said gently. “I’m not going to enable you.”

“Saga, thtithik, I do need to be punished for my crimes.” Jash replied and I felt as though a knife went through my heart. “But if one day I face justice for what I’ve done, it won’t be by an abomination such as the Dark Presence but by the Hist, Sithis, or Hircine.”
