A key difference between the Arcane and Plague Flights was the importance of beauty. While serving the Arcanist the most attention was paid to knowledge but even then beauty was not discarded. Meanwhile serving the Plaguebringer meant showing survival above all else.

To her true beauty was how a dragon's flesh was forever changed in the desperate need to see another new dawn.

So this orchard was a unique sight. I had curled under one of the few trees in it. It was a sickly looking thing but it was more greenery than I had seen in a long time. Greenery in the Scarred Wasteland was something you fought and died to ensure.

Seitou did not allow the creation of this orchard for dragons to find peace in. Instead he had allowed it so that Vergere could test out some wicked magic for her Yun-Harla.

I looked up at the night sky and smiled. Unlike most nights in the Plaguebringer's territory, the sky was clear and allowed the stars to light up the night. It was almost like...like I was back in the Starfall Isles. A simpler time that I wished I could go back to.

My muscles tensed. My wings partially unfurled. My eyes scanned the orchard. My ears tried to figure out what had startled me.

I barely held back laughter. Daenerys, one of my mates, was trying to sneak up on me. She had come a long way from being a ruler to a diplomat. Sornieth was not a kind place at times and so she had learned to fight when need be.

But she still needed a lot more practice to sneak up on a Warrior.

"It's good to see you, Daenerys." I said mere moments before she pounced on me.

"I wanted to surprise you, Jon." Daenerys said with a sigh as she landed beside me.

She must have really tried her best to sneak up on me as her elegant apparel was nowhere to be seen. Even though she had been forced to flee from her former clan, she still dressed like a queen. So to not be wearing anything now was something to take note of.

"You're getting better." I said with a smile.

Daenerys looked at me with a playful look. She moved with all the grace of a queen as she went to my side. With one claw she moved my wing enough to give her space to curl up beside me if I had let her. But tonight I wanted to look at the stars for just a few minutes longer.

Who knew how long until another clear night like this would happen?

"Is something wrong?" Daenerys asked.

"No." I replied.

"Then why?"

"Tonight we can see the stars. So I wish to look at the night sky."

"Then we could look at the stars together."

"If your body lies next to mine I will drift off to sleep."

"And what is the harm in that?"

I nuzzled her face with my own and relished in the simple feeling of her scales. There was hardly anything better than knowing she both existed and loved me. Why had it taken us so long to admit our feelings to each other?

"What is better than lying next to you?" I asked and pretended to consider her question. "Lying next to you, Jorah, and even Alexander Isaacs."

When we were curled up, I felt safer like a hatchling. It was hilarious how small Jorah and Alexander were compared to myself and Daenerys. My lips formed into a smile as I imagined I could hear Jeor working into the late hours of the night. Our son would sometimes get so caught up in his studies that he lost track of the time.

"You forgot someone." Daenerys said.

"Scourge is back?" I asked.

"Within the last hour."

I didn't think there would ever come a time when Scourge would ever not surprise me. The Wildclaw had grown up outside of the continent. Before her egg had drifted on the waves, it had been blessed by the Plaguebringer. But she hadn't known that name or that she was a dragon until late into her life.

Even though Scourge loved us deeply, she tended to wander far from the clan. I could never guess when she would return. Alexander, Jorah, and Jeor tended to not be surprised when she returned. Daenerys and I were getting better at predicting Scourge's movements.

"Have you at least eaten tonight?" Daenerys asked as she prepared to take flight.

"Axx gave me some cinnamon rolls earlier." I reassured my mate. "Selene and Loki brought in a lot of meat from hunting before that."

Daenerys and I shared a brief kiss before she took to the skies. I followed her fading form until she disappeared from view. My attention then went back to observing the stars and remembering a simpler time.

A time when I hadn't yet seen the true darkness of the world.
