This memoir recounts the relationships that a young Kelsey experienced, such as how her whole world got turned upside down when she met Howie. It touches on her complicated relationship with her mother, and how the love she developed for Cole nearly cost her life. The plot makes a full circle from when the author was younger to the adult version of herself, as she grieved the loss of her mother and had to look back at the past to be able to call things what they really were. This book chronicles the author's unraveling through poetry, letters, and recollection as an outlet to heal her past traumas. It’s easy to get lost in this "riveting" story that's difficult to set down once you begin reading. Carlee has also authored a book of poetry,
The Double Yellow Line, and an epistolary novel that follows her relationship with the character Cole from her memoir years later. 2025 will see the release of her fourth book.
Talking With Kelsey Carlee
What was the inspiration for writing Double Crossed and Unraveled?
I was inspired to write my memoir after my mother unexpectedly passed away in 2019. I began unpacking the traumatic experiences throughout my life during that time, focusing on moments where I felt that I'd come emotionally unraveled. Piecing together and sharing my story with the world was important to me, in hopes that anyone who has, or is currently, facing similar issues would be able to relate and know they are not alone in their struggles.
