Many were written and are set during the national COVID-19 lockdowns which offer a poignant and thoughtful voice to the silent many who suffered the isolation worst than most, owing to having underlying health conditions, which will have a contemporary appeal. I am already working on his next publication. Book is release on the 21st July 2023 so pre-order today!

Talking With Malcolm Tilsed

What was the inspiration for writing Bizarre Poetic World of Malcolm Tilsed?

I started to write my book during the Covid lockdown period, I had written a couple of poems over the years, my first poem dates back to 1987 when I was traveling from Middlesbrough to Newcastle, I was looking at all the pollution and decay, I wrote about green issues even before the great green debate of today. My poem stayed in a draw until I found it during lock down. This gave me the inspiration to get cracking and write a more poems, the second being being My Old Shoes 50 years ago my Mum brought me a pair of brown suede shoes for £3.50 (paid weekly from a catalogue) that I still have today and use in the garden.

During Covid I was diagnose with Temporal Artertis which is the narrowing of the arteries from heart to brain so I was in hospital at the peak of Covid and saw first hand the pressures on the health system.

I was in a waiting room on my own for hours and I had a pen in my pocket and a piece of paper and just started to write, the more I wrote the more the poetic juices would flow.

What was the writing process like for Bizarre Poetic World of Malcolm Tilsed?

I just started to flow as if I was given a gift from above.

What was your favorite scene in Bizarre Poetic World of Malcolm Tilsed to write?

The Covid Years, many of my poems tell the story of life during Covid, the isolation, mental and physical health, I was inspired by Captain Tom, I have written a poem about him, for my second book, and the connection with my Dad who also fought in Burma at the same time as Captain Tom.

Covid brought many tears and suffering, but it also brought people together, I rang friends that I had not spoken to for years, letters were sent, cards were written. Rich or poor we were all in the same boat. There seemed to be a state of togetherness, which I hope I reflect in my poems.

I reflect on my skin cancer and my stay in hospital during the Covid years.

Family Life. A lot of my poems reflect family life, the love for my family, the joy that my family and grandchildren give me, it reflects to good times and the bad times, the fun and that tomorrow will be a good day. Being optimistic about the future. Life is precious make each day count.

The World We Live In. I am a bit of a Titanic enthusiast, I have read many Titanic books, been to the exhibitions in Belfast, Cherbourg France, and the dock at Southampton, but there is something in my mind that just doesn’t add up, I can’t tell you what it is, as that is for a later publication, but in this publication my poem, is the stages of the Titanic, leading up to the disaster.

The Ukraine war, I had tears in my eyes, the images of suffering from from Men, Women, and Children. Thousands dying from the actions of one man.

Ghosts and Afterlife. Many of my poems cover my real life experiences, I would never push or try and convince people to believe what I believe, that is a matter for them, but I have tried to offer poetic justice to this subject, in both an honest open and light hearted way. Too many people are suffering from mental illness, because they worry about things that are never going to happen.

Remember the saying: yesterday has gone, tomorrow is a gift, live for today.
