Since this is such a short format, I have to reassure you this theory has been formed from countless months learning about the Remedy Connected Universe. For simplicity's sake: this is a shared universe between Alan Wake (1, 2, and American Nightmare) and Control.
Thomas Zane fought the Dark Presence and eventually had to erase himself from reality. He is an ally of Alan Wake and has done things to help the author. But what if that isn't the truth?
Alan Wake rewrote Departure so he was the protagonist and had an edge over the Dark Presence. So what if Thomas Zane was the original protagonist and is seeking to leave the hell he is in? It would make sense for him to use Alan in his schemes.
