The Sub-Plots Were Good (For the Most Part)
A lot of the sub-plots that people complained about I didn't mind at all. Such as the Lexi and Hitler Youth Camp sub-plots. The former one gave us a character with cool powers and some painful decisions for the family as a whole. The latter doesn't add much but a cool new way the Espheni are attempting to take over plus a small little romance for Matt. The only sub-plot that could've been left out was the ghetto sub-plot.
The Greater Threat
This season it turns out that the Espheni are actually fighting against something else. That they're fighting and fleeing to stay alive. That's part of the reason that the Lexi sub-plot is here this season. We don't get much information about this 'greater threat' and so it's up to the next and final season to tell us. We might have seen this 'greater threat' at the very end of the finale.
Espheni are Divided
The Espheni, aka the invading alien force, seem to be divided on how to best fight. This might be why new ways to successfully invade Earth were tried. We only get two Espheni to base this assumption off of but that does give us a good basis of how to judge the species. There are ones that are priest-like/science based and others that are much more of a warrior caste. It makes the species a little more complicated than they were in past Seasons.
Final Thoughts
This Season was a huge step up from the previous Season. While Season 3 made me question why I watched this show, this Season reminded me why I loved it. I really hope we haven't seen the last of Lexi as I still hope for her being the big villain of the next and final Season. Besides an Evil Lexi we better see the 'greater threat'.
