JASH
There wasn’t much point in doing anything other than wait for Saga. Though I hated waiting, that’s what had to be done. Skyrim’s Civil War there had taught me the importance of patience. But waiting had never become easier for me to endure.
The only thing that helped me persist was that Alex was safe beside me.
“I didn’t tell them about it.” Alex reassured me.
He must be referring to the Clicker. If the Dark Presence had found out about the true purpose of the Clicker then the war was already lost. My husband denying his partner the truth about the object must have torn him apart. To love so deeply as to betray others sung volumes.
“I knew you were strong, but I underestimated you.” I said. “You adore her and you lied. She might not be happy but her ability to forgive is nearly Divine.”
“I just want this night to be over.” Alex muttered. “She trusts me not to lie and I…it isn’t right.”
“To win a war, morality is pushed to the back. It doesn’t feel good when you look into the eyes of those you care about, I admit.”
Both of us turned our heads as the lights began to flicker yet again. The electricity in the building had held since the fight but it had problems. Yet when the lights flickered this time, something felt different. It felt like the announcement of a person’s arrival.
Shortly after the lights stopped flickering, Saga arrived. She looked worn and beaten but air still filled her lungs. Her gaze went first to Alex and a faded smile graced her face. She must be relieved to see him as well as worried about the night’s events.
These next few moments would be the most dangerous with her as she finally knew exactly what she was. She knew she had a power confined to her bloodline. I prayed to Hircine that her being new to understanding would allow me and Alex just enough room to lie for just awhile longer.
“You’re back.” Saga said. “How?”
“I dragged Scratch away long enough to give you time.” I replied with a bow and slow drag of my tail. “He tortured me while there but I held true.”
“How are you back now?”
“Scratch managed to free himself.” Alex answered as Kiran walked to us. “And then the ******* continued to do the same thing it was doing before.”
“The Shadow isn’t in Jash.” Kiran confirmed. “When the Shadow attacked the station, Jash did things it would find impossible.”
I had little warning before Saga wrapped her arms around me in what these dryskins called a hug. In response I put my arms around her and felt the desperation in her hug.
“Imagine when we first met.” I chuckled. “You wouldn’t have thought to hug me back then.”
“Yeah.” Saga laughed as our embrace ended.
When my egg-friend turned to look at Kiran, all merriment left her. She was a good agent and so could turn her emotions off when needed. Though she was still much too sane to do it like myself or my first husband.
“I need to see Alan Wake.” Saga said.
Kiran looked at me briefly and then handed a key to the holding cells as well as a key to Alan’s cell. Not that the latter would be needed. Scratch would take over Alan before Saga even had a chance to hand over the Clicker.
Alex, myself, and Kiran watched as Saga walked away quickly. She thought this would be the final moments before things returned to normal. Oh the ability to believe such hatchling thoughts.
“What is she bringing him?” Kiran asked.
“It is yours to endure finding out the answer soon.” I replied.
“Are you sure that Saga can do this?” Alex asked.
It annoyed me how much he questioned his partner’s safety. But that was only to be expected with a loyalty that ran so deep. He cared for her in the same intense way she did for him. It was something beyond love.
“All of us here will see another sunrise, my love.” I reassured my husband.
“And you can’t get possessed again.” Alex nodded with what must be the last of his hope.
It shouldn’t have been mine to laugh but I was not a saint. I was a Daedric Lord. I was fated to be all that I was and nothing more. There was no growth to be expected of me.
“It has been mine to be tortured by Scratch.” I said as Alex and Kiran looked at me with differing looks of worry on their faces. “It could be that he now has a taste for my very soul.”
“That’s not enough.” Alex said but I could hear the doubt in his voice. “Didn’t you say he wanted me?”
“In previous loops, yes, he would be drawn to you like a magnet. As they say. But much has changed since then. His torture of me hurt and it means there is more for you to lose if I get possessed again. If you kill yourself because of my future possession, he would have a victory even if he can’t claim me forever.”
“I’ll get possessed just to shut the two of you up.” Kiran joked just loud enough for us to hear.
