ALEX CASEY
“You know this isn’t because I hate Jash.” Saga snapped.
We had been arguing for an hour in my office at the FBI. I was sure that a few agents must have made an excuse to linger by my office since Saga and I hardly screamed like this. Hell, I could count the number of times on one hand with four fingers leftover.
“You didn’t like him at first.” I countered as calmly as I was able.
“Why the hell would I?” Saga snapped back. “He was covered in blood, Casey, at my daughter’s birthday! But he makes you happy and…he doesn’t bother me like he used to.”
“Jash has promised to give us space in Bright Falls. He won’t cause any disturbance to the case.”
“How the hell am I supposed to believe you’re not going to treat this case as an excuse to go on a vacation with him?”
“When the **** have I ever put my personal life before my job?”
Saga had no idea about what Jash actually was. She didn’t know because the Federal Bureau of Control had forced me to be silent. They had threatened Jash and if he hadn’t agreed he would be in chains. Hell, he might have ended up trapped in the Oldest House without a means to escape.
What horrors had been unleashed? Had anyone survived?
I had been able to remain calm as I respected Saga. She would do the agency proud when I left. She had too kind of a hand that she was able to see a friend in someone like me. But an hour had passed and she was still no closer to agreeing to Jash joining us.
“You need to respect my decision!” I finally yelled. “Must I remind you who holds seniority? I listen to you only because I am willing to do so.”
“**** you, you know this has nothing to do with seniority.” Saga snapped and hit my desk in frustration. “And if you really wanted to pull rank you would have done so an hour ago.”
Somehow I was able to drink my coffee without throwing it against the wall. As I chugged my drink I calmed down but my rage at the FBC remained as strong as ever. If not for the godforsaken FBC, I wouldn’t be arguing with Saga.
Jash would have joined us without a fight from Saga. And instead of his presence being a way to reveal himself to Saga, he would have focused more on the fight against the Dark Presence.
“What the **** does the FBC have to do with Jash?” Saga snapped, angrier than before.
Had I said that out loud? The argument had both angered and unnerved me that it was a real possibility. But could I really have let myself act so unprofessionally? Maybe Saga had used her abilities but was too pissed off to realize it.
“The Federal Bureau of Control threatened Jash and I to keep a secret.” I managed to get out.
I expected Saga’s wrathful expression to only grow more powerful. It shouldn’t matter why I had lied to her, it should only matter that I had. Yet her expression softened as if she had put the safety on a gun.
“Why?” Saga asked. “Why would they need to silence you?”
“I can’t say or else Jash will be locked away.” I replied and did a poor job of hiding my pain. “We have wanted to tell you for years.”
“And Bright Falls has something to do with this secret?”
“Jash thinks that this case will allow us to find a loophole so that we can tell you without breaking our promise to the FBC.”
The time it took her to answer made me grow worried. Jash would have to figure out how to get to Bright Falls on his own. If she didn’t agree to allow him to join us, I wouldn’t fight anymore. It hurt too much.
Even for me.
“Well, now I have to find out what this secret is.” Saga said with a smirk.
“So we can stop this?” I asked.
“Yeah, it wasn’t my finest moment. I didn’t think you wanted him to come for anything this important.”
“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner.”
Saga only nodded. There was hurt underneath but she knew me well enough to forgive me.
She shouldn’t.
“Jash can join us as a consultant.” Saga said. “Has he been to Bright Falls?”
“Yes.” I replied. “It was over a decade ago but he remembers it like it was yesterday.”
“Is he ready?”
Jash had been ready for years.
“Yes.” I answered.
“Then let's head out before I start thinking about how insane this is.” Saga replied.

I knew I liked Saga! I knew she wouldn't be able to pass up the secret. I can't wait for her to find out. :D Happy Holidays, Jash!
ReplyDeleteSaga is awesome and has a killer sense of humor. So I try to incorporate that aspect of her whenever I can.
