The Kill Order (James Dashner)

Title: The Kill Order

Series: The Maze Runner Series

Author: James Dashner

Released: 2012

Rating: 4.5/6

Basic Plot:  They thought the end came in a flash.

Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares hit the earth, killing most of the population.

The worst is yet to come.

Mark and Trina were there when it happened. They survived. But now a virus is spreading. A virus that fills humans with murderous rage.

There is no cure. No escape.

They’re convinced that there’s a way to save those who are left—if they can stay alive. Because in this new, devastated world, every life has a price. And to some you’re worth more dead than alive.

The end is only the beginning.

This is a Prequel
I shouldn't have to say this but it seems that a few people on The Maze Runner wiki were confused. This doesn't have to do with Thomas and his journey, it deals with the thing that started it all. And it is an interesting journey that Mark takes which is trying to find out what is going on. Teresa does appear in the book, but it's not until the end that you discover that. All in all, I liked that I read this book last in The Maze Runner series and suggest you do the same.

The End of the World
Mark lived through the end of the world aka the sun flares. How that is described just makes you wonder for a few seconds if you're really reading a Young Adult series. You get to learn about the different changes made to Mark's life as well as how far others are willing to go for the good of humanity. I love post-apocalyptic fiction and this book fulfills my need for it.

Sort of Ironic How the Book Begins
The book begins with Mark promising himself that he will have a good day. That no matter what happens, that he will always have positive thoughts. He has trouble enough doing this on a good day, so on a bad day it is near impossible. And after the opening of the book all this bad stuff starts to happen to him and his friends.

Final Thoughts
This was a great addition to The Maze Runner series. I got to see how the Flare got unleashed onto the world as well as the journey of people who end up making a great sacrifice in the hopes that a cure can be found in the future. And the reveal of how Teresa was involved in the book...it made me very happy. I cannot wait until the next prequel book is released as that should give some more answers about the creation of the maze.
