ALEX CASEY

“We’ll contact Saga Anderson soon, Agent Casey.” Kiran said.

The woman had a stern look about her. She didn’t take **** from anyone. My kind of woman. But she didn’t matter right now. Scratch had gotten free of whatever Jash had done to him and gone after me.

What had happened?

I tried to remember exactly how I had escaped but I couldn’t. All I remembered were the cries of the cultists being slaughtered by Taken and running away from Scratch. The next thing I recalled was being surrounded by FBC agents.

Holy ****! He had been inside of me! Scratch had used me!

In the original loops Scratch had possessed me but in other loops he had taken Jash’s body. So the question was if I would be possessed again or did Scratch merely mean to scare me?

“Jash.” I said and looked the agent in the eyes. “Did you find him?”

“We found your husband, Alex.” Kiran answered. “Which means we have an issue. Why did you bring him on FBI business? Why isn’t he back in New York City?”

I wanted to trust Kiran. She was like me: a hard ass that was focused on her job. She must have a hard outer shell that not many could see under.

But if I were too honest too soon then the Dark Presence could take control of reality itself. If it were ever freed then the end of the world would look tame in comparison to what it would do. So I had to lie.

“Jash has a history of being involved with cults.” I lied and looked Kiran in the eyes. “In the beginning that’s all this case seemed to be.”

“Is that all?” Kiran asked as if she could see through my lie.

“After the investigation my husband and I were going to Deerfest.”

“What about Anderson?”

“She would go back to New York while Jash and I took a bus after Deerfest.”

Kiran didn’t look like she fully believed me but she also didn’t have enough evidence to accuse me of anything. She probably realized that Saga was unlikely to go back home without me. But even then Kiran had only met my partner for a few moments and so couldn’t depend on that piece of information.

At least I would only have to hide the truth for just a little while longer.

“Jash is in the holding cell next to Alan Wake.” Kiran said with a glare in her eyes.

I nodded and then rushed to my husband’s side. He was alive and I needed to see him. I needed to make sure that this wasn’t a dream. I needed to make sure Scratch hadn’t ****** him up. All love meant was that one person could tear your heart apart.

But I didn’t want to live without that pain. Not if that person was Jash.

The moment I saw Jash leaning on the wall of his cell, I nearly collapsed in relief. Most would see his posture as him not being bothered by the strange events. But I knew him too well. I could tell by his crest and the slightly too quick movements of his tail that he was as disturbed as any of us.

“Did you really think it was so easy for Sithis to pull me into the Void, my love?” Jash teased.

“I’ll get you out of there soon.” I reassured my husband and then looked at Alan.

The writer looked like absolute **** but at least he was alive. At least the Dark Presence hadn’t won yet.

“Is Scratch still in there?” I asked.

Scratch couldn’t have fully possessed Jash or I would have noticed. Or would Scratch be able to tell what to do to fool me after he had taken me for a test ride?

“It is ours to see more than mortal men.” Jash said. “But my senses have their limits. I don’t trust them with a being such as Scratch. Would Scratch possessing me provide him with the most efficient way to destroy those that dare hinder his plans?”

“Are you really playing games at a time like this?” I hissed. “But, **** it, wouldn’t it be better for Scratch to be in you rather than in Alan? He isn’t a fighter like you.”

Jash turned his head slightly and looked at Alan for a moment. He then walked towards me and put a hand on his cell door. His hand was too high up for me to touch which meant he must be more disturbed than I had suspected.

“Do not assume you know how an abomination like Scratch thinks.” Jash said calmly. “Do not humanize him, as they say, since he is far removed from mortality. You think physical strength is what Scratch craves? Anyone he possesses becomes stronger than any mortal should.”

My hands slammed into Jash’s cell’s door but I didn’t notice until the sound bounced off of the walls. I could tell that my husband was lying to me. It must be for a good reason. But it hurt that he wasn’t being honest.

“Stop playing the ******* hero.” I hissed. “You know where Scratch is.”

My husband looked at me and I barely held back a shiver. He looked at me like I was just another person. Like I was just another objective to complete. The lengths he must have been broken to look at me like that was…we would be in Skyrim soon and have left this **** behind us.

“I’ll check with K-Agent Estevez.” I said once I regained my composure. “You shouldn’t be in a cell.”

“Hey,” Ilmo Koskela said with a friendly smile on his face. “Can you move me and my brother to somewhere more comfortable?”

I glared at the man and he didn’t even flinch. He looked even more smug than before. Jaako glared back at me and I walked away. Jash might later describe it as me storming away but that would be a lie.
